I have a question...


Do the 03-04 G35 6MT have such a vague engagement (i.e. friction point) as the 05-06s do? I think this is one of the biggest issues all the newer G owners have and complain about. They are always talking about not being able to shift smooth or it is hard to do 1st and 2nd gear shifts. If the 03-04s have the same friction point feel then nm...

 

they run 13s stock??? i've never seen that before. not saying its not right, i just didn't know.

 

The fact that you dropped $32k~$38K on a stylish 2-door, 4-seater (which is known to be heavy and "not-nimble" btw) that runs "remotely" quick (14 sec 1/4 ain't nothing anymore) doesn't automatically make it a sports car as much as you would hope.

Would you call an RSX type S a sports car? Would you call a Scion TC a sports car? What would you think if a Pontiac G6 owners tells you he owns a sports car? How about a Celica GTS? You might think your G35 coupe is quick and handles well, and so does a Type S owner think of his Type S.

And there's no need to feel offended when someone says the G35 coupe isn't a sports car. It's a luxury coupe that is, like I said, stylish and remotely quick, and pretty damn good bang for the buck (otherwise I wouldn't have bought one).

 

my neighbor just bought the 2006 Honda Civic SI and the trans is really smooth. Shifting from gear to gear was quick and smooth and clutch feels good too. Very impressed with the new SI.

 

what r u trying to say??? those cars ROCK ! ! ! . . . . . . sorry i'm a little lightheaded, i just sold my plasma to help pay for parts. but you've all got to admit, that list you've got is a bunch of rockets!!! i think it's missing Civic(SI stands for Slow-Ish), Protege, Cavalier, and Taurus(non-SHO of course).

I'm interested to hear other people's comments about the vague engagement point too. I just got my G a month ago and also complain about the 1-2 shift and not being smooth blah blah and I think it has something to do w/not really knowing exactly where the engagement point is. Sometimes when I think I know here it is, I'll stall cuz I let the clutch out too much. Other times when I think I know where it is, I get a jerk when I'm rev match downshift cuz I think it's already engaged but it's not yet.

 

Now my transmission rattles sometimes when in low RPMs.. Like it is not tight enough. Anyone elses transmission makes a rattle noise. Also when I turn the car off I hear it too.

 

That'd be clutch chatter...

 

I found how to the smoothly shift from 1st to 2nd. You must shift quick in leftish-down motion. The only way I could do this is by using only 4 fingers (no thumb) in order to smoothly glide through the gates.

 

thats the throw out bearing. this is normal and theres nothing you can do about it : (

today i was helping out a friend who was looking at acura cars. i felt like the tl and tsx had mushy gearboxes. they were soft and didnt feel crisp at all. i personaly have grown to like the G's transmission. its notchy and precise but not too heavy. the rattles suck though.

 

Yeah the G sounds sooo sexy, then you here the rattle when you are shift too early or when you turn off the car and completely messes up my mojo. I pull up and everyone is staring at my sexy baby, then I turn her off and then the shut down rattle begins and then the car looses all its sex appeal.

 

Make sure to depress the clutch when you shut off the ignition, and you should not hear that rattling noise

 

I test drove an RX8 and an S2000. And I bought a G35 coupe. I thought the RX8 was the best. I was under impressed by the S2000 only because I had been reading great things about the transmission. I found it difficult to tell whether I had actually put the car in gear. Back to the G35 yes they both felt a bit better but not a huge difference.

BTW the best I have driven was my brother's 1994 Mitsu 3000GT.

 

i have owned a 2006 325, 03 evolution, and now an 03 g35. Honestly i prefer the g's tranny i have also driven the s2000, rsx and the E46 M3. The notchy feeling and the stiff pedal feel nice to me. i hate the long throws from the BMW's but they are smooth, the rsx is also smooth.

Things such as the notchyness and the stiff pedal are all personal opinions which may feel pretty nice to some and horrible to other's. I do not disagree with any of the points made at all, but i really like it better than the cars listed above.

I also love the torque that you feel in these cars, i love how at 2 in the morning and no cars on the street going home with the traction control off just slightly pushing on the throttle the car will go sideways will making turns so easily and makes it so much fun. Which is why i don't drive in the rain.

 

You are completely backwards here... My brother has an RX-8. There is little doubt in my mind it would handle better than the G, but damn is the ride harsh compared to the G. I've driven my brother car with a friend and he was complaining about the ride, but he's never said anything in my G.

1st to 2nd does kinda suck on the G, but you can make it smooth if you learn where the engagment point actually is and not near where it is. The car seems to engage suddenly to me compared to my brothers 8 which slowly engages, but I have gotten used to it and can shift just as fast in the G as the 8 without breaking my neck.
