A close call tonight

Ok, so I'm driving home around 1:30 this morning from my girlfriend' house on and I'm on a 3 lane highway. I'm in the middle lane and the speed limit is 55, I'm doing about 60. It's been raining lightly for a few hours and the roads are a bit wet. So I'm driving in the middle lane and getting close to my exit, maybe a mile away. I start coming up on a car that I can't remember what type (maybe an avalon, or a Lexus 430). I really didn't want to drive fast being the roads are a little wet and since my exit was only a mile at the most I decided to just get into the right lane and continue at my current speed instead of trying to pass the guy on the left and cutting over 3 lanes for the exit. So I'm just inching my way past him, I'm doing about 60 and he's doing about 55 or maybe a little more. I eventually get up next to him and then he decides that he doesn't like his middle lane too much and wants to come over in mine without a blinker while I'm right next to him. Not in his blind spot, but right next to him. I hit the brakes a swirve a little to the shoulder because he's about halfway into my lane. I give him a little horn and then he realizes that he is coming right at me, so he goes back into his lane. I then hit the gas to get past him and the car just about loses it. I did about 3 or 4 fish tail flops at about 60-65 mph before I got control of the car back and swerved between the middle lane and shoulder. I really almost pissed my pants. I've only owned real wheel drive cars and I can say this was probably the most out of control I've ever felt in a car when not on ice. I'll take some of the blame for obviously giving the car a little more gas than I should have on the wet roads, but it really pisses me off that because some a$$ doesn't pay attention to what he is doing I almost wrecked my car and now I can't get to sleep and I need to get up early and install my MD spacer!

Glad you're OK. Just wondering...VDC on or off? I've been surprised a couple of times in the rain as well. I always leave VDC on if the roads are wet at all or if the temp is below 45 degrees or so.

VDC was on and the front tires are a little worn but should still be ok, the rears have about 5k miles on them so they are fine as well. And this was on a straight stretch so I don't know why it did what it did. I hit the gas pretty hard but I don't think I floored it. I'll be more respectful in the rain from now on though. Thanks for the well wishes.

yea - definately gotta respect wet conditions.

I recently had a near crash experience as well, was about 1am, driving home form the movies. 2 days after getting my kit on, mind you, and as im merging onto the highway to get home, im ussually speed up near 65 to merge, so that others dont ahve to stop for me. This time i was doing just that, but a damn honda ricer that was in the lane im merging into thought that was a threat. So he floors it also, by the time i noticed this, he was pretty much side by side with me, in a half-merged lane. i slam my brakes.....wow, what a coincidence, so does he! so now we are both slaming our brakes side by side, and >> I << am the one thats about to be crushed into the god damn side wall, cause of some retard that wants to race.

i got so pissed, i must have hit like 130 right after to let off rage.

This is a standard rear wheel drive trait. I owned an RX7 a few years back and was stopped behind a car that was blocking the lane. It was a two way road with space for parking cars on both sides. Anyway, this stopped guy starts to move then stops and then moves and stops again. I literally sat there for a minute waiting for him to decide whether he was going to go or not. I finally said to hell with this and floored it. Of course it was raining lightly and the rear wheels immediately kicked out. I ended up doing a 180 and luckily ended up being "parked" between 2 cars, facing the other direction. Amazingly, I didn't hit a thing - not even the curb; it was a perfect parallel park. Too much power to the wheels when it's slick (rain, gravel, ice, snow) can be dangerous. Be careful out there !

Wow! Good to know that you're OK.

I recently went through a crazy driving experience myself. I was cruising along Rt. 76 near Philly going around 70 when a young guy in a Navigator starts riding my bumper. And when I say riding, I could literally see his upper lip peach fuzz in my rearview mirror. He was weaving around behind me, trying to pass me on the shoulder and even between cars next to me.

Finally, the dude pulls out from behind me, floors it, and almost runs me off the road! In his insanity, he almost slammed into the car in front of him and I had to slam my brakes so he could get in front of me. He literally changed into my lane while I was there. I wasn't paying any attention to him at the time, just trying to ignore him and enjoy the drive. What a maniac. He then proceeded to do that to everyone in front of him. Needless to say, I dialed 911 and reported this guy to the police. They actually have a very good system for aggressive drivers. That's all you really can do if you don't want to express any road rage.

I couldn't imagine what would have happened if the roads were wet at the time.
