How hard can you downshift the auto tranny?

I was wondering how hard you can down shift the auto.... Im assuming there is some limited to keep you from downshifting from 5th to 1st going 90 mph.... What is the cutoff? Is it safe to do hard downshifts (for example I downshift from 5th to 3rd sometimes when im doin around 65mph and the car just takes off) or will it hurt the AT too much?

The auto transmission in manumatic mode wont let you down shift if it is going to go past redline.

You should be fine doing what you are doing now(5th to 3rd at 65mph). The auto tranny would do the same if you were to stomp on the gas at the speed.

The auto tranny in our G's is a good one, but don't forget it's not a racing transmission.
The TCM won't let you downshift further than you should. The maximum downshift points are programmed in.

We need an upgraded TCM option.

If you don't up shift you will just bounce off the fuel cut off all day. Keep it in mind the down shifts can be very slow as well.

on the down shifts, try and blipping the gas this helps it to drop into a lower gear. sometimes it won't downshift on the first try, but if you give it a little gas that seems to make it downshift sooner.

Every time I tried that the car just jerked funny. I know the newer G do this on their own...I loved my 06 loaner. I think I know the car a bit better now...I'll try to blip and see what happens. Hey whats the worst that can go wrong......famous last words..

Its actually not that idiot proof, when you floor it from a stop in the manual mode it doesnt up shift for you when it redlines, it lets you go into the red. My 03 5 series with tiptronic always upshifted right before redline.

Just remember one thing - put it in 'R' for racing at any speed.
