G35 AT manual shifting
G35 AT manual shifting
Hi guys. I just recently bought a 2004 AT G35 sedan but I think I may have a problem with the manual shifting. Whenever I shift from auto to manual, it always starts out at the 4th gear regardless of the gear I started out in auto. It also doesn't go to the 1st gear when the brakes are applied when I'm on manual shifting. Does anyone know what could be the problem?
Re: G35 AT manual shifting
That’s normal, it always goes in to 4th gear. The consensus seems to be that it’s not a gear selector, but a maximum gear selector.

Re: G35 AT manual shifting
Yes, it's not a true manual gear selector like a BMW or Porsche would have. The number displayed on the dash is not the gear you are in. When it says "4" it will run through 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, but stay out of 5th. If it says "2", the car will only use 1st and 2nd. You cannot force an upshift, you can only make the next gear available to the tranny to shift into -- but you can prevent it from upshifting. You can also force a downshift, if the speed is low enough for it to be safe (the tranny won't shift into an over-redline situation).
