I didn't redline nor did i "Dog" it. I'm a firm beliver in the "break it in like you drive normaly" school. It has served me well for many years.

See This Guy's website.

Google it and you will find conflicting theories. Infiniti recommends not exceeding 4500k and avoiding cruising at the same rpm's for long periods of time. Others think the opposite is true - to drive it like you stole it right off the dealer lot. I'm not sure it really matters any more since manufacturing and engine technology are so precise these days. I say it's better to be safe and follow the manual.

I have seen both ways done with different friends. Neither had any problems for the few years they owned the cars.

Follow the manual. From all the reserach I've been able to do I've determined the following:

The inital cycles of heating and cooling of the engine is what is mainly responsible for its break-in. City driving (keeping the rpms low) will be good for breaking in the drivetrain and engine since you will not be keeping a constant speed.

Finally... change your oil as much as you like in the first few K. You will see if you analyze it that it will have very high levels of bad stuff The filter will be good for as long as it's speced for, but I would definetly get rid of (especially) that first fill of oil after about 100 miles if you plan on keeping the vehicle for a very long time.

Change the differential and transmission(6mt only) fluid after ~3k miles. Many studies have shown that this initial change will have a significant impact on component performance and life expectancy. I have changed many G's transmission(6mt) and differential fluids after the 3k interval and I'm always blown away by how much wear has already accumulated on the installed magnetic plugs.

I changed my oil at 90 miles with Amsoil full synthetic and after having approximately 3K on the car I changed it again. You can check out my oil analysis here. Try comparing it with this other analysis in which this oil was factory fill.

Also note that factory fill is 10w40!

And in-case you are curious, I've been using synthetic since 90 miles and I have no oil consumption currently @ 22.5k miles with 7500 mile drain intervals (just makes sense becuase I rotate the tires too at this time and do whatever other services are neccessary).

if your on the high way just do some slow acceleration up to like 105 you wont be over 4500 if u do it slow just let the engine stretch its legs a lil

I've driven my car like i stole it once i got past 400 miles and i'll continue to drive it like that til the day the engine falls out the bottom. 18,000 miles so far and no problems (knock on wood)

just drive in city traffic all day long for the first month and it'll break in fine.
