Re: sound diff...coupe vs.sedan

The coupe gets a different resonator and a performance muffler.

Hint, just changing out the sedans premuffler with a 18" or 22" resonator will close the sound gap a whole bunch. I love the sound I have now. Though I'm in process in creating my own custom exhaust system.

To explain what I did, I replaced the premuffler with a 22" long by 4" Magnaflow muffler that acts as a resonator. It's a straight threw design. Give the car a nice idle rumble that goes from idle to around 1900, where the muffler subdues it.
I highly recommend the mod as it only cost $70 total and theirs absolutely nothing offensive/bad about it, only very positive.

Re: sound diff...coupe vs.sedan

I planing to do that to my new G35 next Month. Care to give more detail of what you did? Specific model of the pre muffler? Got any Pics of what pre-muffle you're swap out? Got a sound file of the before and after? Most important part, did you MPG suffer? I know its a lot of question here but I have to ask before I try it out and hate it, thanks..

Re: sound diff...coupe vs.sedan

The model number for the Magnaflow 22" by 4" 2.5" pipe diameter muffler that I'm using as a resonator is 10436. It shows up in the Magnaflow catalog under universal mufflers, aluminized, round, muffler diameter, then length and pipe diameter.

Here's a pic of the premuffler on the car, it's the big flat shaped thing in right smack in the middle of the pic/exhaust system.

Here's a pic taken at a different angle that show's the entire exhaust system. Premuffler is gone and the Magnaflow is in it's place.

I don't have any sound clips as I don't own anything that can record sound in any way. No drop in MPG. Best thing I can say is, this is a 100% positive mod with ZERO negitive aspects. It offer's better sound in a rev range you don't have to be in by abusing the motor with revs. The idle is much deeper and much more enjoyable to the ears, where it was a touch to quite stock, for my tastes. Yet it remains very suttle, nothing offensive about it. One of the best $70 things you can do to the sedan.

Gsedan35

Do you get any gains from doing this ? is the pre-muffler restrictive/less back pressure.

Re: sound diff...coupe vs.sedan

I noticed a slight improvement. Removing the premuffler is but one element in uncorking the sedan system. It did make a difference, but not a whole lot. Making the car sound more sport is it's biggest plus.

The cats, Y-pipe, not so mandrel pipe bends and the muffler all aren't the best team players for flow. Found this nice performance Y-pipe for only $285, even has a really nice Y-collector design.

Re: sound diff...coupe vs.sedan

Wasn't the stock premuffler designed to aid in the under-car aerodynamics? It appears that, although it's ugly and huge, the flat shape of the stockpremuffler was designed to provide smooth airflow under that portion of the car.

No arguement on that here. Believe me, in the manny times I've had the car on a lift to imagineer my own true dual system. I've looked and looked at that area pondering the airflow issue. But the Z and coupe don't run premufflers designed for airflow in mind themselves. Yes, I wish the new parts I put on could copy the original premufflers wind cheating ways. But, the search for better flow/power isn't going to let me take the route.

Re: sound diff...coupe vs.sedan

Gsedan35, just installed the coupe mid-pipe and went for a test ride. The car feels a little more responsive and the sound is definately more deeper. Even sounds better coupled to my HKS muffler. The stock mid pipe weighs a ton!!! Next step is a new Y-Pipe and better flowing cats.

I saw your dual exhaust setup and must compliment you on your design. You are true a G35 pioneer. Find a sponsor and get that exhaust system patented soon. Good work.

Small problem I notice with the Y-pipe linked to on Page 1. The stock one on the right has braided flex sections to absorb engine movement. The aftermarket one does not. This seems bad to me.
__________________________________________________ _

You know what, the part about the flex section. I need to bring something unsaid by me and my new custom true dual setup. In the process of creating my system, I found a place to buy 6" flex sections that could simply be cut into my converted Acosta Racing Y-pipe and the price on them was frankly pretty good. So, I ordered a pair of them. BUT, when I opened the box I got a surprise, one that could only be revealed by gazing at the inside of the flex sections with my own eyes. They have horrible corrugated ridges inside them. I confirmed that all flex sections have this. I eliminated any thoughts of using them and basically tossed $65 down the drain. But such is the course I plotted for myself to get the best possible flow I could. I had already handled the exhaust enough and I knew the whole systems rubber mounts would have more than enough flex to take up the slack for not having the flex system on my exhaust system. Several other Y-pipes and exhaust systems don't use them either. And I can see why.

Re: sound diff...coupe vs.sedan

Yeah But the Weight! The Stock Sedan Pre Muffler weighs a Ton! I changed my Dad's out with the Stock one from My Coupe. Weighs MUCH Less & sounds really Good and Agressive with That and The HKS Muffler......

Re: sound diff...coupe vs.sedan

NismoV35, we seem to mirror each other on mods! With the deeper sound, the car seems much quieter IMO. My wife noticed it off the bat. This is how our cars should sound. The install took only 20 minutes and was very easy. The hardest part was getting the bolts loosened. A gorilla must have installed them! I must have shedded 15 to 20lbs off of the weight of the car.

Mike,

Pictures please! So you simply switched to the coupe part?
How much did this set you back?
