Keyfob Range

Yello All,

I find my keyfob range a little shorter than I'd like. If I want to put my windows down I can't start from far enough away from the car. I end up waiting at the car door for the windows. Am I alone here?

Love the car, this is all I can find to bitch about.

Frank

What do you mean "put the windows down"?

Re: Keyfob Range

"windows down" He's talking about the ability of your key fob, If you press and hold down the door un-lock button, that it will cause the windows to roll down.

Since the day I took delivery, I found that my key fob range is really short. From the times I have read the other discussions that have been done on the topic I learned two things. One is how to increase the range. This is true and not a joke, take the key fob and press it against your chin and keep it thier while you press the button. You'll get allot better range, your head acts as a antenna or something. The second thing is that the range that everyone elses key fob will work from, varies. I had a loaner G35 last month and it's key fob had much better range than mine does.

And it's also been said that changing the batteries doesn't change things for the most part if you have a short range one.

Oh, I didn't know that would work that way, cool feature! The range on mine as far as "locking" goes is pretty far, maybe the "unlock has a shorter range for security reasons, like accidentally opening the locks?

Re: Keyfob Range

Do I have to hop on one leg while holding the fob to my chin? That's really going to detrack from the image the 35 affords me. I was going to ask about the batteries. Thx for the reply.

Re: Keyfob Range

I was thinking of picking one of these up from the local BMW store...supposedly they are all the rage with Bimmer owners to extend the range of their fobs. I might hold out for the carbon fiber version...

Re: Keyfob Range

This is an old trick, but I've been using it since the late 80's with stock and after-market remotes.

SoCalTed, got a good laugh out of that one.

Don't wear that thing in a thunder storm! Or you'll really have a lot in common with bimmer owners.

I think you should get one, no one would even notice in SoCal Maybe it came from Roswell!

Nah dont waste money on that hat, just make one yourself out of tin foil, will also prevent the aliens from reading your mind, LOL!

But seriously, I am surprised to hear people say their fob has a short range, no matter how far away I am from the car mine always works, as long as I have clear LOS.

Re: Keyfob Range

Mine seems to work to over 80' (line of sight) which is good enough - without any body amplification tricks. However my old IS300 used to have 'unlimited' range - I could unlock it or pop the trunk through my office windows out to 300' or more (a bit of a pain as if I hit the buttons on the key by accident in my room I would have to trek out to the car in the farthest corner of the car park to close the trunk).

Re: Keyfob Range

Now I have range envy. Thanks a lot. Wonder how I can make mine longer.

Really, I wonder if I can increase it somehow. My car is "old" (4/02) wonder if there's been a design change.

Re: Keyfob Range

You guys must have gotten the bionic arm update or something for it to work at 80+ feet. Mine is at about 50 max with the fob-2-chin enhancement!

(p.s. maybe I will get the helmet)

Re: Keyfob Range

Yeah, I get pretty good range too. Even without using my chin I usually get about 50'-80' of distance. I can usually hear it before I can see it. And with the chin I can easily get 60'-100' of range.
