Air Filter

Changed the Air filter..my lawd was that a pain in the butt (as compared to others). I had to rip it to the intake to pull it apart enough..

...any tips?!?!?!!

Also, buddy that owned a G said that the K&N trails oil into canal screwing the MAP sensor..anyone have any experience here?!?!

I didnt think it was that bad.... do not attempt to change the in-cabin filter if you think the regular filter is difficult to change.

Yes. I ruined a mass air flow sensor on my Maxima about a year ago, I'm pretty sure it was because I oiled it too much and didn't let it dry long enough. Now I'm a lot more comfortable oiling the filters. I got a stillen CAI with the same K&N cone filter as my maxima but am very cautious now. I might even switch the filter to a AEM dryflow like some others have been doing here to avoid oiled filters altogether.

amsoil is a good reuseable nanofiber dry air filter. better filtration, no oil, easy to clean.

The oil can mess up the sensor if the filter has too much oil on it. I would just change to a Stillen CAI or JWT pop charger and get the AEM Dryflow filter. It does not need oil.

Are any of these high performance dry filters (AEM or Amsoil) available in the stock size? For those of us who want better filtration but don't want to put on a CAI.

Undoing the clips and pulling the inner part of the intake box (piece towards engine bay) away due to the flex boot on the intake tube allows just enough room...thats really the only way to do it. You only need to pull it apart enough to slide the filter out......the job can be done w/ 1 person, but if you have someone to help you (hold it open) while you do it, I'd imagine the job would be much easier.

Let the oil dry enough & pat any excess away after it dries (the oil tends to harden up a bit I found) and you shouldn't have any issues w/ your MAF.

Thanks...

Great tips. I'm going to try some more high performance filters on the next change...or if I upgrade the car (which i'm seriously considering).

+1. My first time took me about an hour before I took a step back and realized that taking that flexible part was all that was needed. Now, it only takes about 10-15 minutes.

C&R MAF Sensor cleaner found at most NAPA stores... I cleaned mine and I noticed smoother shifts and a smoother acceleration.

Just be careful when cleaning and do not remove the MAF from it's housing. Just spray the MAF with it attached to the housing.
