yes unless they are modded with ecu/turbo boost upgrades...then they can eat you for lunch and have some left for dinner.

Unmodified A4s are a step down, more competitive in the IS300-ish class. S4s, however, are quite a different story.

My point exactly. There's an RS8 that I see on my way home from time to time; talk about a beast.

I almost bought an S4 rather than the G. The S4 is 250HP stock. For a $700 computer upgrade, you're making 300HP. With a $1200 downpipe upgrade (on top of the computer), it's like 330HP. Then you can start our kind of mods, ie intakes, exhaust, and the like. Now lets talk about upgraded turbos.
The new A4 1.8T can be a mean F#%*er too. With little cash layout you're making in the range of 300hp in a car that is light, and has AWD.
Oh, and there are a few people who used things like the RS6 turbos and injectors ect on thier S4 to make about 490hp out of thier car's 2.6L motor with a wide, flat torque curve.
The new S4's shoehorned a 4.2 V8 into what is effectivly a glorified jetta. It's noseheavy, is very difficult and expencive to modify, and even wit it's V8 against a M3's V6, the M3 still beats it. I think Audi made the same mistake the diamond star did when switching the eclipse from a turbo 2L to a N/A 3L. Turbos are easy to make power with, and that's what builds an aftermarket... and a strong aftermarket sells cars.

i strong aftermarket sells cars to enthusiasts who are a small percentage of people. A very very small percentage of the population will change a single thing to their cars

this may be true, but look at the percentage of S4's for sale that are modded, or turbo eclipses.
Here's a discussion on S4's and A4's from another forum:

I looked at a A4 with a 3.0... the car was stickered around 37K ... I can imagine what an S4 must cost probably in excess of 40K so I wouldn't even compare it to a G35...

A 2004 S4 can hold its own with any car on the road. At 340 hp, this is virtually the same engine they dropped into the new A8L. You don't need to modify it, it handles well in stock, and is AWD to put all of that torque onto the road..

A4stock < G35 stock.
S4 stock > G35 stock
S4 stock < G35 modded
Now, 2000 S4 with ECU, exhaust and short shifter ran 13.9 (1/4mile) and crazy driver with similar mods and 100 octane should run 13.6-13.7 raising RPM to at least 4000.
So G35 even auto with i/h/e, ECU and TQ conversion will be equal if not smoke S4 with good traction of the line. In addition, adding supercharger with at least 8lbs of boost or turbo G35 will break 12sec, changing internals on the top off what I listed hehe, you looking to mid to low 12sec then raising the boost you're in 11s easily.
