'07 G35 xAWD vs '07 G35 6MT
'07 G35 xAWD vs '07 G35 6MT
Hi all,
I was planning on waiting until Spring to buy a new G but have decided to buy now. To me, both models drive and handle well, of course, with the exception of the thrill of shifting the MT.
I'm curious if any of you were faced with the same choice and if so, what was the determining factor? I'm leaning towards the xAWD because of the snow we've got here in Denver this year. But I'm wondering if I lose ponies, dead stop acceleration, and gas mileage if I get the xAWD.Yeah, I know I'll pay a little more for xAWD, but it's noise. I know physics haven't changed, but I'm wondering if the 6MT has enough tail weight to still drive it safely in 2 inches or less of snow. If the 2 were running the quarter mile, which would win?
All opinions welcomed....cheers!

The 6MT is, as you know, RWD, and RWDs don't do well in snow. Of course, you can get snow tires, which will help a lot, but AWD _and_ snow tires are even better. It also depends on how much more you enjoy driving a stick than an automatic. Also, what would you be doing more often: driving in snow, OR, speeding a lot and seeing how fast you can do a quarter mile. Finally, the difference between the two with regards to quarter mile speed in good weather is probably noise compared to the difference between the two in quarter mile speed _and_ snow...

As far as the AWD performance penalty, I don't think I've suffered too much. The final drive ratio is a little higher on the AWD model so the car jumps nicely off the line and moves aggressively enough for me. The way I look at it, the G35X offers the best of both worlds, RWD bias, 25% at the front on start up, and up to 50/50 split. Don't forget the "snow mode" switch that locks the torque split 50/50 and reduces throttle response up to 12 mph so it's possible to get out of some really ugly messes in the snow. The car rides marginally higher than the RWD but the look is still good and I don't care about drop. The only downside is about a 2 mpg gas penalty that I'm paying at the pump. That works out to about 50 gallons a year for me.

lol, I swear to god, I remember a thread a year ago "05 G35x or 05 6mt"
I love the way the X handles in the snow...I love the way the x handles in general. you could push it and push it and push it. the car is very forgiving.
however - the first gen X differs in front suspension geometry..which ****s up our aftermarket support. if it wasnt for that and the slight decrease in gas milege, I would say the G35x for sure...

I have snow tires for my coupe, and it does fine in light snow, but anything over 2 inches and I'm not going too far. The G35X with snow tires would be excellent in the snow.
Very informative, Cale. You said exactly what I needed to hear to make a decision....X it is! Now it's just a matter of haggling with the 'stealer' to get a decent price so I can trade in my '03 Acura CL. Wanna hear something funny? The local stealer has quite a few newer ('05-'06) Acura TLs, Lexus IS and ES's, and even a few BMWs on the used lot. I know Infiniti has other models, but I swear some people must have bought those cars, drove 'em around for a few weeks...(ok, maybe months) and then traded them in for I-cars!
Anyway, great post Cale! Much appreciated!
Peace,

But if you're asking if I faced a dilemma about which one to choose. No, there wasn't really any doubt that the G35X would win out. After driving an Acura Legend for 10 years with a stick, I knew I didn't want to go back to a stick for the type of driving I face on a daily basis. I just don't get enough "sport" driving to warrant the hassle of dragging the stick back and forth in traffic. In my mind, you should be able to enjoy at least 30% of your driving on open roads before you choose a stick over an auto. I'll be lucky to see 10% of my driving where driving a stick shift would be an attractive option.
