Fog/High Beam upgrade DAMAGES wiring harness?

I just dropped off my G35s6MT at Infinity of Lisle (IL) and asked them how to switch out the high beam/fogs. He asked what bulbs I'de be putting in. I hapened to have the silverstars with me. He told me that the white and blue bulbs get too hot and damag the wiring harness. He said that this damage would warrent the replacment of the entire harness, which he said cost about $700.

Is this guy just blowing smoke up my @$$? Or is this true? Anyone with this ugrade who can confern or deny this? if so, please let us know how long the bulbs have been installed, and how often they are on.

Also, if it is true that they cause damage when on for prolonged periods, I'll have some for sale if anyone's interested.

Re: Fog/High Beam upgrade DAMAGES wiring harness?

The manual says it takes HB2 or 9003 55/60W for the High Beam/Fog lights. But on Sylvania's website it says the max wattage is 60/70 for the Silverstars. Isn't this too high? Or is that just what the maximum value can be and actually runs within spec for the G?

I've had my SilverStars in my G since last summer. I believe I was one of the first to ever try them on the G as Sylvania had just come out with the 9003ST, and I could only get them direct from Sylvania as no dealer yet had them listed. No problems what so ever and they're still going strong.

If the SilverStars are 55/60W, there should be no problem. However, if they're not, then installing them could very well void the warranty.

I do not have Xenon's. Do the Silver Star's replace the regular headlights?

I use 90/100 W superwhites H4's for the high/fog with no problems - have used this sort of "off-road" wattage in a number of cars over the past 15 years with no ill effects to wiring or anything else

The Silver Stars replaces the Low and Fog/High beam bulbs. With all our members we have not heard of any having trouble with the wire harnesses while using ANY Aftermarket bulbs.
Sylvania does say that the life expectancy is less if the Silvers Stars are used as DRLs.

Remember the early 2003s did not come with HID.

Re: Fog/High Beam upgrade DAMAGES wiring harness?

as long as the wattage is correct -- i see no reason as to why it would damage the harness

i was running some 90watt bulbs for an extended period of time (7months) -- no damage.

agreed, stock wattage is no problem. Higher wattage will and can burn out stock wiring harness or sockets. You can though get auxiliary wiring kits for about 50 bucks. These have thicker (lower) gauge wire and connect direct to battery and ground. They sell them with quick connectors that match up to your stock harness for easy connections. Hardest part is finding a place to screw in two small relays. These work well.
