Gas consumption

Now I am not bitching about the gas mileage as I didn't buy this car think it would get MPG like a geo metro. My car ~3300 miles so I am past the breakin period. Last tankful, I reset the AVG MPG seting on my NAV. When it was empty I averaged 15.9 mpg. I know I have a heavy right foot.

So on the next fill up I decided to go super easy. For three days I have been driving it like a grandma. I haven't gone WOT. All of my accelerations have been very gradual. Hell I even had old ladies passing me in Buicks. But the the Nav only shows a 19.8 avg mpg.

So how do people claiming to be getting 23-24MPG do it? I am not going to continue to baby it if I only gain 4mpg.

Re: Gas consumption

Gas is consumed most during acceleration. Cruising on the highway will increase your mpg. It takes less gas to keep the car moving at a constant speed than it does to get the car moving from a complete stop.

I average 18 mpg daily, but during a drive to Vegas, I averaged in the mid-20s.

Re: Gas consumption

I probably average 16MPG in city driving, and 22-24 on the highway. The highway is at an average of 70-75mpg.

The Navigation system shows .5-2 mpg over the actual values.

Re: Gas consumption

Your last comment about the Nav reading interests me. Are you saying that the Nav shows the mpg at .5 - 2 mpg better than it really is? If that is the case, it explains a lot!
I have wondered if some of the big variations that people are reporting in mileage is due to some using the Nav reading vs. computing the mileage yourself (miles/gallons at fill up).

Re: Gas consumption

Sounds about right. Mine gets about the same and now with longer warmups in the cold weather, it's worse.
Up here in Ontario, I'm getting 17 maybe 18 mpg (US gallon) in mixed driving. Only when I get her on the hwy at steady speed will I get anywhere near mid 20's

Re: Gas consumption

My NAV almost always reads 1 MPG over gallons pumped / miles driven.

I get about 25 on hwy trips. Otherwise I get about 21. During times of stop and go traffic it falls to about 16.

Re: Gas consumption

My nav used to be about 1mph higher than the manual calculation, but this last fillup it seemed to be within a couple tenths. I usually get 14.5, driving around the city. I've seen as high as 27 on one tank, but that was cruising at 55-60mph to Vegas. At the speed I prefer to travel (around 80) it's more like 24 on that trip.

Re: Gas consumption

In about half highway/half city, I got 22mpg the one time I checked mine!

Re: Gas consumption

Almost all city, 17.4mpg calculated on the last tank, 17.2mpg reported from the Navi. I'm pretty much a leadfoot.

On a long highway trip to and from Santa Cruz, I calculated 26.5mpg.

Re: Gas consumption

I just tanked up and checked my 2nd tank full for MPG. 17mpg for both, 100% city driving. Considering how I drive, It should be lower.

Re: Gas consumption

I just gave up on my milage. In the hot summers of Houston, you have to leave the AC on 24/7 which got me about 16-17 mpg. I do 50/50 driving. Now that its cold, I dont have my AC on, but I've been driving a little more aggressive. Just the other day, I filled up and you guess it, I calculated 17.4 mpg. However, mine is a AT. I can't imaging you get 17 on a MT.

Something just isnt right. There seems to be no conistancy with ppl's milage. *Shrug*

Re: Gas consumption

I think it has to do with people's driving patterns. Some people have a different definition of "aggressive," and a different definition of city/highway. For instance, some people might consider their commute to work as city driving, but not think about the fact that it happens on freeways at 65mph. Or they may say they do freeway driving, and not count the fact that it's stop-and-go 15mph commuter traffic. There does seem to be a large swing between babied highway driving and track day type driving on the fuel economy, though.

Re: Gas consumption

I try not to pay too much attention to my G's mileage, it really sucks, but hey, horse power comes with fuel comsumption and warm up in cold winter is the killer.

Re: Gas consumption

So far I've only driven about 1,000 miles which hasn't even finished with the breakin period yet. During this time I've been shifting at 3K and use 5th gear when going 45-50 on city roads. My driving percentage has mostly been 75% city, 25% highway. So far I've been averaging 17-18 mpg. Not great by any means but not too bad either. I'm sure like everyone said I could avg. in the low to mid 20's with heavier freeway driving. As long as I'm getting decent gas mileage I won't be too worried. If I was I would have bought a Prius.

Re: Gas consumption

Yes. I reset the NAV mileage on each fillup, and it over estimates the mileage that I calculate from miles and gallons purchased.
