Took my '05 G35X in this morning for the 16K / 18 month lease service check up. Car runs like a gem, no problems to speak of.

They call me today to tell me I should get my brakes replaced ($250), car aligned ($80) and change the hepa filter ($80)

I dont drive the car all that hard, does anyone really think I need to get my brakes replaced after 16,000 miles?

 

I have an 05 with 29K miles and have no brake issues so far.

 

I have heard of brakes going early (as early as 12k) on G-sedans, but dealers also are money hungry. I'd check out the wear myself.

Alignment, not probable.

HEPA filter, most likely, but I'd prefer to buy it from Grubbs Performance and do the install myself.

 

I only ever change brake pads when they squeek, just don't drive on them for too long when it starts to avoid rotor warp.

 

Alignment would be noticable if you vibrate on the highway, also try taking your hand off the wheel on the highway, if you track fairly straight you should be good. Won't be perfectly straight due to the angle of the road surface.

 

This is clearly a case of shameless dealer coercion. In black and white:

1. Brakes. Only need to be replaced or serviced when/if they are no longer within specifications. Unless the dealer provides you with remaining pad thickness or rotor deviation out of spec, ignore. (But keep a watchful eye. Brakes don't last forever ).

2. Alignment. Only needs to be performed if unusual tire wear patterns are evident and/or the car is pulling off-center while in motion on a flat road.

3. Cabin filter. This is a real maintenance item, but any half-handy person can replace it himself for <$15 with an aftermarket part.

 

Many (if not all) of the 05 "X" sedans have the 03-04 RWD sedan brakes that can wear out fast. It is possible you are due for new pads. Check them yourself or have another shop take a look.

I get my car aligned at least once a year to help save on tire wear.

$80 for the filter... they are nuts. You can change it yourself in 15 minutes.
