G35X review in Autoweek mag

Got my new Autoweek (Jan 26 '04 issue). Page 15 has a good review of the G35X. Here is the link to the web story. Enjoy

Re: G35X review in Autoweek mag

Thanks for the link. Thought I'd give my 2-cents of the G35x after I drove it in the first major snow-storm in the Mid-Atlantic region today (we had about 6" of snow). I had posted previously problems with snow collecting in the wheel-wells of the G35x. With 6" of snow and a 20-mile drive, there was definitely snow packed into the wells at the end of the trip. What was a bit disturbing was a smell in the car after the end of the trip best described as scent of burning rubber. I think it was either the snow rubbing on the tire (unlikely) or the snow that melted onto hot rotors (especially the front rotors) causing steaming of the melted snow (like throwing snow on a hot pan?). In any case, I hope it's not a major issue, but was curious if anyone else with G35X had this issue or had a thought about what the smell was from.

With regards to the traction - it was not as sure-footed as I would have liked it, but I can tell you that I saw SUV's also spinning their wheels all over the place - I'm not expecting the G35X to be like an off road vehicle, manhandling 6" of unplowed snow. It had more than enough traction today to make me feel as safe as any 4-door sedan I've been in during major snow accumulation.

I've had the same experience with my G35x and also with my Subaru. When driving in that slop you can't prevent the wheel wells from clogging. I think you're right about the rotors for the smell. I don't think it's a big deal since I've driven my Subaru through s$*t like that for years. The smell is there but the next morning everything is fine.

Both G35s have the same 260-hp, 260-lb-ft 3.5-liter V6 engine, so those extra pounds and the accompanying parasitic drivetrain losses of awd will probably slow the car in acceleration and lengthen its stopping distances. The mandatory five-speed automatic will slow it even more (not enough people would buy a manual transmission to make it worth offering one, Infiniti said). Ride height on the X is 10 mm (0.393 inch) higher than the rear-drive G35, and the center of gravity is 7.5 mm (0.295 inch) higher.

This still kinda bugs me. Still don't know any real numbers on the X and I'd get a 6MT.
