G35 Sedan AT question

My 2003 G35 is doing this. While in manual mode say comimg to stop from 4th gear. After stop it stays on 4th gear.
Never goes down to 1st. I have to downshift it manually. Called Kirkland infiniti and they told me this is normal. Car still takes off but it's in 4 th gear.
Just wondering.

The display will stay on "4" but the transmission should down shift automatically to first. Then when you accelerate again it should cycle through to fourth gear again, but it will not shift to fifth unless you shift it manually. So the display just shows what the highest gear you left it in was, not always what gear you actually are in. Does that make sense?

Nope. Stays in 4th-- or says 4th, I should say. The car will downshift automatically from whatever gear you select, then shifts up to that gear from a stop.

Manumatic mode in the sedan is more like a top-gear selector. Your car will shift normally up until it gets to the gear you have selected, and it will not go above that. By default, the car will select "4th" when you put it into manumatic mode, even if your car is technically in 3rd or 2nd. This doesn't mean you're now in 4th, it just means it won't go above that selected gear. You can go 1 - 2 - 3 - 4, and it will shift up until that gear if you're accellerating, but it doesn't necessarily go into it. Hope that's pretty clear.

Top-gear selector is a good way to describe it. At least I knew what I was talking about, even if everybody else didn't. LOL.

Re: G35 Sedan AT question

I heard that AT coupe's manual mode is different from sedan's. I think that both trannys are almost identical, but sedan and coupe have different tranny softwares. Here is my question. Is it possible to change the software?

Yeah. The "manual" mode on the tranny was the only real negative point that had me swaying toward a bimmer when I bought it. Didn't sway too far, though.
