Well, we've all seen this debate before. At least the forum members were pretty mature about it (to a certain extent). Usually, a post with TL vs. G35 will end up being a flame war. Kudos to the Acura TL forum.

Nice, friendly discussion. I expected bashing and flaming, but no, all the responses were intelligent and respectful. It almost makes me want to go out and test drive a TL. Almost.

Good stuff.

Yeah - those TL guys were pretty mature and reasonable about the whole thing. I wonder if we'd see that kind of restraint in the G35 forums...I think we might be a bit too passionate and zealous about our cars.

G35s Rule! TL drivers are nice guys. Can't we all get along?

Re: omg, TL vs G35 debate again.

To me, the I35 is a better competitor to the TL. Along with the S60, A4, etc.

The G35 is in a class with the CTS, 330i, etc.

It's the difference between "sporty" and "sport" sedan.

But hey, I can't figure out why some people shop the G35 Coupe against the G35 Sedan. Oh well, to each his/her own.

I recommend going and test driving a TL so you can be more educated about the topic if and when a debate might come up. I found it to be an absolutely awesome car that is very smooth and has all sorts of technological marvels. The area where it falls short is performance, the engine, suspension, and drive wheels are all not up to par with the G35.

I already drove one, and the G35 is still personally a better car overall.

I own a 2000 TL and a 98 CL (3.0) and a 00 Prelude. I am familiar with the great Honda and Acura lineup. I test drove the TSX and TL twice plus the G35.

I clearly preferred the G35 and I purchased a G35x, premium with XM. The exterior of the G looked more original and better and I like the clean look of the graphite leather interior, the titanium trim, and the amber gauges. The TL interior was too busy looking. Both stereos sounded great. I have never been a fan of Bose but the sound is great in the G plus the XM is amazing.

Re: omg, TL vs G35 debate again.

I am an '03 TL-S owner and I, like many other TL owners, really like the G35. When I bought my TL last year, they were selling for invoice and the G35 was selling for close to sticker. The G was my first choice -- loved the low-end torque and handling and braking -- but the dealers were not cooperative and the TL was just too good of a deal to pass up (plus my wife hates how the G looks -- go figure). In the end, the TL-S is more suitable to my driving situation -- 60 mile RT daily L.A. freeway commute. The TL interior is simply better and more well-equipped than the G (the '04 even more so). I have 18K miles and have never even had the opportunity to drive on winding mountain road, so that part of the performance advantage of the G is not even relevant. The TL-S gets better gas mileage as well.

That said, I still get a little jealous whenever I see a G on the road.

I really liked the TL and was going to buy it over the G, having driven both quite a bit, then I took one last test drive and for some reason - was in the TL 6mt driving at about 40mph in 3rd and just floored it to see, well suddenly the wheel goes light, starts tugging all over the place and the whole car gets out of shape - till then the torque steer was absent and I thought it was a great product, but suddenly this thing was more scary then the VR6 jetta I was just trading in, so back to Infiniti - and 4000 miles later my G35 6mt is just getting run in and while it is not refined like the TL, it is a really great performer and Im very happy with my selection. I will add though that if people prefer a softer quieter ride and an easier to drive car - 6mt gears, noise vs TL 6mt gears and turbine v6 and never driver over 7/10ths then.......

Re: omg, TL vs G35 debate again.

I personally feel that the TL's engine is just as good as the G35's (especially in the '04 model). What the TL lacks in low-end punch, it makes up in smoothness and refinement. The VQ35 is a bit rough around the edges.

As for the interiors, I personally feel that the G35 wins over the pre-'04 TL. The last-generation TL's interior looked very '90s and used a lot of switchgear from the old Honda parts bin. For instance, the turn signal and wiper stalks look identical to my old '87 Accord. The '04 TL is a different story. It doesn't have that "avant-gard" look of the G35 but looks very sporty while looking very classy. The '04 TL is a huge leap ahead over the '03.

Prior to buying my G35, I almost bought a TSX. Another great product overall -- a bit short on power but great ergonomics, build quality, and driver interaction. I wished I waited for the '04 TL before buying my G35 but still probably would have picked the G35 because of the extra room in the backseat, RWD, and a great price ($500 over invoice).

It was important for me to find a sedan that was fun to drive since I missed the days of driving my S2000. I replaced that with a '03 Jetta GLX which didn't quite cut it.

Re: omg, TL vs G35 debate again.

Hey Fireball, I echo your sentiments - at the end the dollars do make for a largish gap the G ended up about 6k less than the TL (6mt + winter tires + dealer markup) with the G im making do with the all seasons (and have found the car "excellent" in the snow - all things considered) and the dealer was way more eager to actually sell the car. I tried the TSX, but comming from a Jetta VR6, found it to be typicall small engine Honda - all revs and no torque - I cant spend all day at 5800+rpm. The TL was great very easy to drive and nice power delivery - till I hit the torque steer and I was back to the G (got the 6MT with all the toys-nav), I love the low end grunt - you dont have to hammer the car, but if you do it really wakes up smartly. The handling is spot on and overall a great product - I would really recommend the G to anyone, the TSX only to Rev happy kids and the TL in automatic only. Net effect is I have my sports car, and a great family car - a case of having ones cake and eating it!
