New Engine Air Filter... Wow!
Today I replaced the Engine Air Filter as a part of the 30K service on my 05 G35X. I recently bought this car so I am not too aware of its history. The noise/vibration/harshness had been a bit annoying prior to the filter change but after reading the posts here I thought this to be the norm with the G35s.
Well I took out the old air filter and it was just plain filthy. Grease/dirt caked on the inlet side everywhere. The filter however, was doing its job as the throttle body side of the filter was clean. Same with the housing. I must have wiped down the caked on dirt for a good 10 minutes but the throttle body side was clean. This had to be the first time the filter was replaced (I noticed that the cable tie was the one with tabs that holds the tie in the mounting hole).
After the filter change I took a ~20min drive and WOW! What a difference. Engine noise and vibration down SIGNIFICANTLY! Previously I thought the Engine sounded like it was straining a bit when I let loose on the throttle but no more! Just a plain old factory engine air filter. Who'd thought it.
Now that the engine is considerably quieter, I am noticing a slight ping when I hit the throttle. I'm going to throw a can of BG 44K before the next long roadtrip and see if it'll help.
