Steering Question

hello everyone,

i did a search and read some good comments on the G's steering and how it's generally acknowledged that it's 'stiffer' than say some other cars but my question is this:

when my car is cold, the steering is super buttery, almost like a domestic or honda. as the car warms up throughout the day, the steering gets noticeably firmer, much more resistance esp. in parking lots, while i'm trying to parallel park, etc.

i had my steering fluid flushed THREE times within the last 20k miles (i paid for the first time, dealer did the next 2 for free).

dealer says the progressive 'stiffer' feeling as the engine gets warmer is normal. they said no issues with my steering pump, fluid is clean, etc.

does anyone else experience this??? please share your thoughts. any input is greatly appreciated!

rob

I never noticed that on mine. I'll pay more attention to see.

Hi Cremaster,
I recently bought an '04 G35 Aero 5AT and I notice exactly the same thing as you do and its kind of annoying me.
During my test drives I thought that its one of those progressive steerings that are quite soft at low speeds and get stiffer as the speed increases.
But the problem I feel is that let's say I started from my house, the steering will be soft, will get on a highway it becomes stiffer. Now when I get to some parking lot the steering doesn't get soft again.

But I am loving the car. The weather is pretty crappy here in Ottawa, Canada and a lot of people cautioned me but I didn't expect that RWDs can be this crappy on snow (this is with all seasons, hopefully it will get better with winter tires).

I am really curious to know if this is the normal behaviour or there is something wrong with my car

Just curious for anyone who knows. Does the power steering fluid in our cars ever need to be drained/refilled or flushed? I don't see it at all in the scheduled maintenance of the owner's manual, not like with the transmission fluid, diff fluid, coolant, etc.

Stiff steering

I have noticed the steering is very stiff and my G is probably worse due to the underdrive pully configuration.

I would love to find a solution to make the power steering more powerful and easier to steer especially for parking.

wow, i totally forgot about this thread and just saw it again. haha but i am still experiencing what i previously wrote and just learned to live with it, since the dealer won't acknowledge anything is wrong. plus, the steering fluid is "clean" so i don't know what else to do.

i have noticed my 05 do the same thing. In the mornings the steering will be very soft then as i drive it will firm up. Also once its hot it will remain firm. i figured this was just normal.
