Re: Break in smell

What kind of smell? I've had a not-quite burning smell after hard drives shortly after the break-in period. Now after 3800 miles it doesn't smell.

Re: Break in smell

Yeah I'm smelling it a bit when I get on the car... I can only assume (based on my experience with my old Sentra SE) that the smell is related to the Catalytic... at least it doesn't reek of sulfur (rotten egg) like my Sentra did..that was horrendous!

Re: Break in smell

Mine did it to. I think it is a combination of things, but mostly oils burning off of the exhaust and off other componets that get really hot during hard driving. I suspect it will subside in a couple thousand miles. Other explanation is your burning up your clutch, but highly unlikely considering the exceptional level of expertise of the members here lol

Yep.. I strongly believe it's catalytic burning off something inside.. my SE with 35k on it was doing the sulfur smell much less than when I bought it..but it stuck around..heck the sales guy told me when I bought the SE it was because we were under a sewer grille.. LOL

Re: Break in smell

There is a coating on the exhaust to protect it during transport that burns off during the first couple thousand miles. It does smell kind of like charred brakes or clutch.

Re: Break in smell

I still get some of that smell after a drive on the freeway, just slightly though, I have 6k on my car, I thought maybe it had something to do with the VDC.

Re: Break in smell

I noticed the same thing. I thought I had hit a skunk or something. Also a had a rubber smell the first day but that went away and now it is a skunk smell. I was also wondering if the detalier smoked a doob in my car or something.

Re: Break in smell

I just went driving to work to print something else and I started to smell it.. based on what I'm smelling..it has to be the catalytic or the exhaust coating that's been discussed,

Re: Break in smell

Yup. Protective coating. Most imports are getting it now. Our G and FX had the same thing, for the same amount of time (about a month).

Re: Break in smell

Mine doesn't smell like a skunk, maybe you really did hit one, LOL! It basically just smells like a new car smell, burning off some coating or something. I just thought it would be completely gone after 6k, but don't get me wrong, it's very subtle anymore!

Re: Break in smell

Hopefully yours is just the "breakin" smell. Some of us though, are experiencing a burning rubber smell, some think its the VDC since it seems to occur in winter. I'm not convinced, since it seems to be worse during cold temps. vs. slippery roads. The heater perhaps?? My dealer says its a coating burning off, but I didn't smell it during the first 5 months (summer), only when it turned cold. I still get a bit of it, now that temps are increasing and roads are clear. I guess I'll wait to see what happens next winter.

Re: Break in smell

I don't smell it inside the car, just after I have gotten out after driving.

Re: Break in smell

I still get that new car burning smell even after 19,500 miles. I have asked the dealer about it but they just said its the coating burning off still. It is the same smell though.

Re: Break in smell

I don't think it's a problem, I have owned a lot of new cars, and some keep certain smells for quite some time, if you have gone that many miles, if it was a problem, it would have shown it's face a long time ago IMO!
