Engine won't stay idle after a battery change!
 

Last time my car was in service, I was told my battery was going bad and that I needed a new battery. I went to Costco this evening and bought a battery.

These are the steps I followed in putting the battery in.

I removed negative terminal first and then the positive terminal. Took the old battery out and put the new one in. It was a tight fit, however managed to get it in there. I connected the positive terminal first and then the negative.

These are all steps from infiniti manual. I guess these were correct.

Once I was done with it and I started the car and drove around the block. I noticed some of my settings were missing, such as radio stations and the like. Those are minor and I reprogrammed them.

Once I was in the garage I turned the engine off and started again a couple of minutes later. The car started completely and it seemed it couldn't sit in idle and shut itself down. After a few attempts, this one time I gave it a little bit of gas and the it stayed on idle.

This is how it works for now. When I started the car this morning I gave it some gas as last night and it stayed on. Any ideas on how to reprogram this? Is there a fuse I can pull or reprogram anything on this myself instead of taking it to the dealer?

I'm pretty sure you just need to charge it up for a bit... Leave your car running for about an hour, even if your not driving it. I bought a new battery in my old car, and had to do the same. Even if the place you bought it from says its good to go, that doesn't always mean it really is.

I'll give it a try. My work is only 4 miles away. I hope it reprograms itself. I hope I don't have to pay the dealer a 110 dollars for one hour labor for this.

Please read other threads before posting this stalling issue. When your car is due for a new battery, your car is like 60k miles. Your throttle body is dirty. You need a throttle body cleaning. Cleaner is like under $10 at local auto parts store. Its east to do. Clean it, then you'll be fine.

car running off alternator after startup - so no difference if batt is dead after car is turned on. ==def a maf or tb issue. something either fouled or unpluged

Drive it for a bit, car needs to relearn!

Thanks so much guys for all posts. I think it took a while to relearn. It was fine around yesterday evening. It stayed on idle without having to give it some gas.

Since there was another recommendation on cleaning the throttle. I figured I would give it a shot. Oh! boy, that throttle was so dirty, I probably used up half a dozen cleaning towels.

It was very well worth it.

Well, 10nara, since this thread is already here, I'm gonna post in it. My car is doing this after I disconnected the battery. I just made a 24 mile trip. Is that not enough for the engine to be retrained? It doesn't seem to me like it's ever done this before when I've disconnected the battery. I suppose I may not have had it disconnected for such extended periods. Also the airbag light was flashing b/c I replaced the IC filter and I left it disconnected to see if the light stopped and I finally looked on this site and found the reset instructs. I think I just tried to start it after I did the reset and then the engine set itself off. Does that little on/off/on/off sequence totally reset the ECU? Could this be why my engine shut off even after a 24 mile trip in the car after reconnecting the battery?
