It was because it was tied to a full front brake job give or take a few bucks, but yes quite a deal.

if you get away with it, that's great. But its definitely not a waste. The fluid DOES degrade.

I also used to think it was unnecessary, like you, but that was up until I owned cars with some performance. On my trucks and economy cars, it sure wasn't a problem. Then again, I never kept those for more than 40k miles. First car I experienced problems with brake fluid was my Volvo S70 T5. When it crossed the 60k mark, the brake pedal became spongy and travelled twice its normal distance. Dealer flushed the fluid and bingo! Back to specs. I had to do it every 30k after that or it would get soft again.

I do track my G, and I certainly don't want the pedal going soft when I'm coming into a 90-degree at 100 mph, so you can be sure I'll be replacing that fluid! (hell, I wouldn't want it going soft during a 70-mph panic stop on the highway, either!)
