Question After Dead Battery Replaced, Car Stalls After Start, Won't Idle Unless GasPedal Tap'd

OK, add me to the dead battery club after just under 4 yrs of ownership. Just this week my car started one time, then wouldn't again after a brief stop. No big deal - I read the large battery thread and realized that many of our batteries die early and without warning.

So I replaced the battery and the car fires right up - then dies immediately as if it doesn't hold the idle speed. I can see the tach run up, then fall to zero and car dies. If I hit the gas before the car dies, it's fine (holds idle and keeps purring along).

Any Ideas?

Well the car runs just fine after the tap of the pedal. If it was the maf, wouldn't it have issues at any speed and throw a CEL?

Sounds like you might have a dirty throttle body. Go to bythabay's DIY video library (there's a stickied link for that on top of the forum), and there should be a video for cleaning the throttle body. That should help get your idle speed back to normal.

no. nearly all vehicles, if you unplug the maf, you cant idle.

same with vacuum lines. check for those too

It probably runs like hell right now too...uses up more gas than it should, maybe expels visible emissions out the tail pipe...something like that?

The battery died, so the ECU got reset. The car probably just needs to be run for a while. There are drive cycles that you can go through to get it through its OBDII tests sooner rather than later. But my guess is that after an amount of cold starts, highway driving, city driving, idling at lights, ect. it will be just fine. I'm no Nissan expert (ok, I know nothing about Nissans), but this happened to my M3, and I was told it can take up to 2 weeks for the computer to completely relearn all its fuel maps and go through all the motions. My local emissions testing facility confirmed that this isn't an outlandish amount of time.

Drive the car for a while and see if it gets better. FWIW, drive cycles usually involve idling the car for a few minutes, then driving at a steady 20-40MPH for a while, then at a steady highway speed for a while, then idling...but maybe not in that order. In any case, try not to go through any large fluctuations in the throttle, as that can reset the drive cycle sequence.

Hope that helps.

You never had a problem to begin with. "idle learn procedure" should be performed every time ECU is reset as outlined in Nissan/Infiniti manual. Takes about 20 minutes.
