Replacing windshield-- question

So some idiot that works for California Glass is at the shop where my car is being fixed, and accidentally removes my windshield. He was told to take the winshield off a Mitsubishi, but took MINE off by accident. First of all, he didn't seal it up again correctly, but second of all-- two cracks are starting to grow up the windshield from the lower passanger's side corner. It's obbiously from stress, not from a rock chip, as the cracks run parallel about an inch apart, and start RIGHT where the windshield meets the body.

My question is this: They're going to replace the windshield, and I want to make sure they don't try to crap me out with an aftermarket POS pane. What marking/part # should I be looking for to make sure I get what I had? I know I'm looking at the OEM solar controlled glass, which runs ~$420, but how can I tell if they try to give me a cheapie?

Re: Replacing windshield-- question

GeoBau, when I had my windshield replaced, they used a PPG windshield, it's fine, actually, it doesn't seem to pit as easily as the OEM did, I would worry more about the job being done right than the glass being OEM, hope they don't have the same moron do it!

Re: Replacing windshield-- question

I talked to the shop owner, and he said he's going to get them to spring for a PPG. Same reason you cited

Just out of curiousity, why did you have to replace it?

Re: Replacing windshield-- question

When I got mine replace last weekend with a SafeLite
windshield, I called Infiniti and asked how much the Infiniti
windshield cost vs the SafeLite. The Infiniti advisor said
"Go ahead and get the Safelite one, the only difference
between the two are about $800 and the word Nissan
stamped on the glass." My new windshield was installed
better than the original, the original was not silicon sealed
at the bottom. There was no seal at the bottom!

I think my OEM windshield was an Asahi, not Nissan. Geez, an $800 difference, thats ridiculous!

Re: Replacing windshield-- question

I had my windsheild replaced sometime last year, because of stress points developed from the factory installation (I think this was discussed here before too). The pane just developed two cracks from the seals near the body of the car... Weird.

Got it replaced under warranty, and they put in a OEM glass to boot. I was pretty happy... It has withstood 13,000miles just fine... No pits or anything.

Re: Replacing windshield-- question

My OEM windshield started getting pitted at just around 2,000 miles, 2 months, it was making me mad, the replacement is now about 5 months old, still looks good!

The OEM Solar Controlled windshield is $426... The other windshield was $800 more?

Re: Replacing windshield-- question

Wow. Yeah, the $770 must be list. NAGS is what Ray told the guy he wanted. I remember now, because the guy in the office looked at him like he was crazy. He said if they couldn't get that, to get PPG.

Re: Replacing windshield-- question

That's a lot IMO. But, you know, Ford had to replace the rear window in my Mustang vert, and it was like $2400. list, I was like, geez, but I found that ALL back-lites are very expensive, much more than the windshield in most cases, LOL, I'd hate to see what the G35 OEM is. I wouldn't spend the money for an NAGS, geez, it's still glass for crying out loud, and a rock can still break it, at that price though, it ought to be bulletproof, LOL!

Re: Replacing windshield-- question

Actually about a month ago or so a rock hit my windshield and made a spider crack on the passenger side. I went to see what I could do, so the gentleman did some sort of thing so the crack would not spread anymore, well guess what it is! I went back to him and he quoted me a price for $270 to replace the windshield.. after seeing how much you are talking about for replacing windshields I am getting a feeling this $270 is for a POS. What should I tell the guy to get the correct windshield? I am still hesitant on getting a new windshield because they always say never replace a windshield because it will never be as good as the original. But in this case I need to... Suggestions please!

Re: Replacing windshield-- question

Hey, wait, when I had my windshield replaced with the PPG, I asked out of curiosity what it would cost if I replaced it myself, and it was the same price, $270, and this windshield is fine as I stated earlier, Speedy Auto Glass here in Albuquerque.

Re: Replacing windshield-- question

So do you think I should go ahead and get the windshield replaced? BTW, what is PPG? The guy said he was going to deduct the $78 he charged me when he tried to fix the crack so I am only going to have to pay like $192 for the people who come to his shop to replace it.
