Easy mods

I'm thinking of doing the wires and the Z tube soon. They seem to be the best bang for the buck.

Are these fairly easy mods for someone who can follow directions well and is moderatly productive with a wrench but other than that no major mechanical experience?

Should I wait until my break in period is over to install them?

Re: Easy mods

If you are familiar with the use of a rachet wrench and
sockets, you should be fine. Just go for it.

Re: Easy mods

Both of those mods are easy to do, I wouldn't see any reason why it would hurt to install them right away...

Re: Easy mods

Only problem with the Z-tube is that it takes some restraint if you want to not floor it every so often to get the intake roar! If you can limit yourself during break-in, as NIKE says, "Just Do It!"

Re: Easy mods

Alright, I think I'll go for it. Besides, it's a good excuse to finally get some metric tools! Now where's the engine in this thing? :-)

Does anyone have a recommendation on a brand of grounding kit?

Re: Easy mods

I had just got my G and for my birthday I asked for a set of metric combination wrenches. When my wife asked what for - "nothing dear".

Just don't drop any bolts, it will severly slow you down.

"Don't drop any bolts"

laughing out loud on that one!!!!

Man, every 15min job has turned into an hour cuz i dropped a bolt or something.

Was walking thru Performance Nissan's parking lot to get a cup of coffee down the street and I and noticed a couple of OEM 10mm bolts sitting in the gutter.

MINE!!!! Not only did I protect someone's tires from getting a flat, but now I have some insurance against my next DIY.

Yeah, dropping bolts can turn your 35 minute GroundingGear™ install into a 1 1/2 hour epic!

Re: Easy mods

I don't have the wires *YET*, but $2.65 invested in a magnetic pickup tool and another 3 bucks for the claw grabber have saved my a$$ when other dropped bolts went astray.

While you are at it, why not drop in the K+N?

Re: Easy mods

I couldn't find any detailed info on the K&N. I know it's supposed to increase the air flow from the stock filter. What is required for maintenance. Do I have to clean it frequently and oil it or something? Being that it let's more air through, is there a risk of more dust getting through also?

Re: Easy mods

K&N has been on the market for many years. Flow is a large part of it's design, and they probably trap as many particles as the OEM filter. Flow with a layer of crud on the surface is said to be as much as the OEM.

I've been told that many ppl clean their filters too often, and the only real problems are if it's over-oiled. Frequency of cleaning depends on how dusty your driving environment is. Some go for more than a year without cleaning and there isn't any dust build up. Others need cleaning every 6 months or so. From K&N: The general rule of thumb is that the filter needs to be cleaned when the dirt build up gets as thick as the wire mesh. The usual interval is 30,000 - 50,000 miles depending on driving conditions. We recommend that you check your filter about once a year in normal usage.

Re: Easy mods

I was a firm believer in the K&N products until I came across test info on http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/
Check out the air filter test link.
For me I think I'll just stick with paper elements from now on.
