hazards and low speed will usually save the tire. it might break the sidewall but it will usually buy you enough time till you get home to have a new one put on.
I keep mine in both of my cars. I've never had to use them, but you never know. Sure, it weighs more but it's only about 30lbs and I'd rather haul around 30lbs of reassurance then be left screwed with a flat when I'm pressed for time.
for daily driving (even spirited) the spare tire isn’t going to make a difference by removing. I keep mine in - I have a donut though - absolutely no reason for full size spare (for me), since I would never drive far on a spare anyway.
When I go to the track, I usually take it out (sometimes not) and take 2 cans of fix-a-flat, just in case.
BTW, full size or not, check the tire pressure regularly! I recently checked mine and it was 20psi
(supposed to be 60psi) - I dont think I had ever checked it prior (4 years) - maybe once... it would have done me no good if I needed it - now I'll check it quarterly at least (I dont drive it much).
The primary reason I run with it isn’t even for an emergency though... without it, the trunk floor has a big dip (even with the particle board cover thing) - so I use it basically for stability of the trunk floor.

I put an oval shaped, tin container in the tire's place. I keep tools and stuff in it. But more importantly, it is the same dimension as the spare, so there is no dip or hollowed out area in the trunk and it fully supports the cardboard overlay.
Is it really supposed to be 60PSI??
