OMG - a Kill - on the first day of PE TT ownership

OK Guys.... I have never posted kills before b/c I have never street-raced random people on the street. i just never thought that I could ever keep up with the M3's and the like. Now I am sure that you won't find the following car as fast as the M3 (b/c of weight etc.) but it is still worthy!

I am leaving my friend's house in Encino (at the 101fwy at white Oak onramp) at around 1:30am. This "car" zooms right up to my car from behind, slows down abruptly and kind of talegates me a little for the remaining 50 yards or so onto the 101South onramp. Now, I say it was "car" because i am not sure which it was (wait, just bear with me). It was a mercedes (i only saw his in my rearview mirror) and as I leisurly turn onto the onramp, this guy makes a right turn behind me into the left lane of the on ramp. I knew at that point that I just had to do it. This guys gained on me in the first 2 seconds as I realize that he is WOT'ing it to pass me, he is right beside me - front bumpers aligned. I am flooring at this point and pull 1-1.5 car lengths on him by the time we reach the freeway (~50-80 yards); I let it go at this point as I am in the middle of 3rd gear (~80-85mph) At this point I let off the gas, and am kind of disappointed; for a split second second i think that it is a convertible mercedes and I only gained a car length on him?! Damn. As I see him pass me on the left, I see the following: a convertible - but it has an AMG badge on the right!!??!!!. (that's all I caught at this point, he was still accelerating and I lost sight of him as he (I'm sure) went WELL over a 100mph and was quite a few yards in front before I knew it). "Wait a minute" I think, was that an AMG!

Well, you guessed it, as much as I was afraid to find out how fast (not fast enough for the money spent) this car is (given that the TC is screwed up and that I am running only 4.3 psi of boost). I do NOT know my mercedes, but I looked it up a while ago - and if it's an AMG and a convertible - it seems like it can only be the CLK 55 AMG Cabriolet or the SLK32 AMG, right (the car was on the small side - so it's can't be the s-series AMG's)? But the front lights did not look like the SLK's sqaurish lights (according to the MB website), so it must have been the CLK 55 AMG.

WOW WOW WOW. If that's the case, I am very happy - that's a 5.1 sec car in 0-60!?!

Anyways... it's late, gotta go to bed.

Nice... What I enjoyed was not so much that you beat another car but the fun you're having with the TT.

Yeah but they're only mid to high 13 second 1/4 mile machines.

Sounds like he got the jump on you.

Also, please keep in mind that i am running at 4.3 psi (not at 8 or 10 like I will be in the future). 4.3 psi is not only a low boost setting, but at this setting the turbos are on the enge of the efficiency envelope. As I turn up boost, the efficiency will increase significantly, i addition to the psi itself. I say mid 13's (or low 5's in the 0-60) ain't bad for the car in the present state. At 4.3 psi, with this kit the car is about 340 at the crank (this number illustrates my point)

Zimbo,

I am truly having fun. The fun factor is really off the charts - you have got to get this one in place of your Vortech

Gsedan,

Well, yes, once i fry the bigger fish and solve this tranny problem. And once I have the cash. The next thing on my list is a boost contoller (HKS EVC) and J&S safeguard. Then Wheels, then LSD.

THe top was down, so i'm not sure if it was a hardtop or not. Could be, but i would say it was on a smaller side - hence my guess that it was the CLK

an sl55 amg runs mid 12's i believe bone stock... and will beat a 911 turbo 6-speed from a roll (anything between 5mph and 40 on start...)

both generation clk55amg's have been running benz's amg 5.4L n/a v8 pushing 349bhp i believe and slightly more torque... 370 ish... mated to a 5 speed auto. but the car is heavy... 2 tons or so.

Damm gurgen, running that low of boost and that your car isnt even really tuned that's pretty impressive, those AMG V8 benz's are BEAST's especially on the highway!! I was out in my friend's S55 AMG, 2001 no supercharger and that kills most things on the highway, road etc. We let this e36 m3 sc'd car get the lead on the highway and we just pulled on him like it was standing still, they are sososo fast and have endless power and torque. Can't wait to see some video's =) enjoy it safely... Martin

Re: OMG - a Kill - on the first day of PE TT ownership

Thanks for your responses guys

There have been several friendly reminders made for me to be careful (personally to me, not on this forum). I appreciate your concern and value your friendships. But rest assured, I respect speed very much and going up to 80mph on the freeway is not THAT bad - it is done all the time by everyone here I am sure. Having survived a plain crash (long story) was one of the things that made me very cautions, along with knowing the power of an FI setup. THanks again.

Now, back to the this

THe CLK55 AMG is 3960 lbs, which is about 600 lbs heavier than our car. It is a rear wheel drive car (not AWD), and it is still rated at 5.0-5.1 seconds 0-60. Having gotten my car to about 5.8 sec 0-60 with about 240 at the wheels (long time ago ), it is not hard to believe that my car with a 4psi turbo can do this well. PE says that I have approximately 340-350 crank hp at 4.3 psi, which makes sense. In fact I am pretty sure he will take me if we were going from rest, but I do belive that we are at the same HP/weight ratio right now, as our performance was at least identical here. I will take it for now!

EDIT: I should really say that given my tranny problems, I am sure i am putting out less than what usually be presribed for a 340-350 crank hp car, but the difference in weights really made a difference here - hence about the same wheel hp/weight ratio.

I think we're all a little more cautious after what happened to Frank on the weekend he brought home his Greddy.

I'll take my car up to the top of 3rd from time to time when there is a straight shot with no cars in front of me but that's the extent of my thrill seeking on the street. I suspect you're similarly cautious.

My sentiments exactly.

In fact, last night, the "race" was VERY much like the onramp acceleration you show in your video, except that the onramp is slightly uphill instead of downhill.
