Brake Caliper Piston Seal
Hey, I have a quick technical question, and I know it should be in the tech section, but I need a quick answer and no one has responded in the tech area.
I bought a set of 05 brake calipers, and one of the rears came with a really small hole in the piston seal. I'm curious as to if I need to get a new seal, because I'm not sure if the seal actual seals the piston with brake fluid and such, or if its just a dust guard.
If I do need to replace them, Anyone know where I can get a set/one and how hard it is to install? I've got some time before I'm installing them, but I just want to get everything in order.
Thanks, and mods please don't move this, if I don't get any response soon, I'll delete the thread.

thats just a dust guard. if you want to replace it yourself you will need a rebuild kit. blow the piston out with compressed air via the brake line port. use a piece of wood to catch the piston as it blows out.
careful, it will pop out with good force.

Thanks for the info! I was actually just doing a bit more research on it. Think it would hurt if I didn't replace it? I'm talking about a very small (<1mm) tear in the dust shield. Also, do you think that it would be worth it to do a rebuild? I'm thinking about powdercoating the calipers, and would probably have to rebuild them if I did.
If you want to powdercoat them, you'll have to strip them down and PC them. I've had VERY good luck with ceramic-based caliper paints. The duplicolor kit works well and i've done calipers with it and had them hold up in autocross events and such.
The outer seal is a dust boot. If you want, you could prob smeal a small dab of high temp silicone on the tear to seal it

Yeah, I'm debating on what I want to do. Have a local PCer who I'm probably going to meet with tomorrow to talk about price, otherwise I'm just going to do the G2 caliper paint kit.
Anyone ever change out a dust shield in a caliper? I'm not worried about the price or getting a hold of them, just want to know if it is going to be more hassle than it's worth.

I've rebuilt calipers before. I haven't looked into the G35 calipers though.
It's not hard. You just need some compressed air to pop out the piston and then it's a simple rubber boot and square cross-sectioned O-ring around the piston.
Parts stores have sold rebuild kits for calipers...but i haven;'t checked on the G35 parts though.
