A Sedan Question
A Sedan Question
Sorry guys, but I'm stepping out of bounds here. I'm a coupe owner myself, but I'd like to know how you think of your sedan. Would it be fair to say, "A Maxima with an attitude?" I'm not creating any wars here, but I would just like to know how you interperate your own sedan. I think of my coupe as a bottle rocket on testosterone. Forgive me if this has been brought up before. I would really like to hear you own analogies. Thanks! Mooser

Re: A Sedan Question
I've had my G35 sedan for almost two weeks now, and logged a little over 1k miles. It is absolutely NOT a Maxima with an attitude. It's much more of a 350Z hiding under a sedan shell. It's the FWD vs. RWD distinction that makes all the difference. Although the two have very similar VQ35DE engines, the Maxima's FWD setup will always be a serious limiting factor, especially compared with the G35. I carefully tested both, and confirmed my long-standing distast for torque-steer. Many, if not most substantial throttle inputs in the Max will result in an immediate tug at the wheel if not a required actual corrective input. I came from driving a 210hp/220ft-lb V-6 Camry which, while not nearly as bad a torque-steerer as the Max, was also afflicted. The funny thing is that I'm still catching myself making instinctive, yet now unnecessary, preemptive inputs to address T-S that's no longer there for me.
Here's one way to sum up the vast difference between the two cars: the Maxima is a luxury car with a strong pretense of performance, whereas the G35 is a performance car with a strong pretense of luxury. Both are awesome machines, but very different.

I think of it as a coupe with more doors, less weight, more trunk space, a tighter turning radius, and a smaller booty

Re: A Sedan Question
I grew up driving big RWD cars and have always liked the feel of being pushed forward. I absolutely love my sedan. I've been into euro sport sedans for awhile and this is what I really wanted (well, actually an RS-6 was a little out of my price range). The G is one of the most gorgeous sedans on the road. I don't consider it to be inferior at all. I've driven friends' 5 series and A6's and this drives very similar to them, only better. It's faster and handles better.
For some odd reason people tend to knock the sedan, but I've read posts from coupe drivers who drove the sedan and really liked it. I do like the coupe, but I like the classiness of a real sports sedan.

Re: A Sedan Question
Geo,
That's hilarious that you've mentioned the smaller booty on the sedan. We don't have many G35s here in Seattle and I never paid that much attention to the coupe before buying my sedan. Now, when I see the coupe, the size of that rear bumper really jumps out at me. I mean, everything else about the coupe ties in so nicely but that bumper really reminds me of my woman after we married. (Better hope she's not interested in following this thread :-)
Re: mooser, I never even considered the Maxima. Would it be fair to say about the coupe, "a chopped Maxima with fewer doors and big bumper?" To be fair to your analogy, "bottle rocket on testosterone", I think of my sedan as the "four-door Ferrari that Enzo would have made for middle class folks like me". This is a great period in automobile ownership!

Re: A Sedan Question
I've never thought of my sedan as a Maxima. My parents used to own a Maxima.
I like the looks and sportiness of the coupe, but prefer the looks and praticality of the sedan. Plus people don't expect a 4-door to be fast, hehe.

Re: A Sedan Question
I see the sedan as a 4 door Z.....also i see it as a japanese BMW...hehe...with more punch and better value....man this car ROCKs....and its more practical and less flamboyant than the coupe...
Re: A Sedan Question
Yup, 4 door Z.
I had a Maxima, then a 350Z with lots of mods, and now the Sedan. Much more than a Maxima.
I drove the coupe and sedan quite a bit before getting rid of the Z, and anyone that says there is a big difference is not being honest.
The ONLY differences are cosmetic (4 doors), the suspension (I already had the Nismo and it is on my G), and the exhaust sound.
The is no noticable difference in power if you ask me, and my sedan in lighter than the coupe.
Don't get me wrong, I am not knocking the coupe, it is just as great as the Z or sedan....

Japanese BMW and/or a 4 door Z.
That's it! That's exactly what I was looking for. I did have the opportunity to drive 2 different sedans, and they are very nice. I noticed immediately how much lighter it felt compared to the coupe. LOL on the "booty." Yes, the coupes do have quite a booty. I apologize if I upset anyone, that was not my intention.

Re: A Sedan Question
I owned both..maxima...and g35 sedan...I do not think the sedan as maxima with attitude...more like...japanese bimmer...
if it isn't because the coupe trunk space and the butt, i'd buy the coupe.

I know bmw is a nice car and i'll give credit where credit is due..but the g is not a japanese bimmer..
The g is a skyline..too follow other skylines...its a sophisicated luxury version of the skylines..
and actually, isn't the coupe the little sister of the sedan..

No offense taken here, I took it that you really like your car and wanted to know why we liked ours, hopefully we feel in similar fashions....
I have not paid much attention to what coupe owners have said, is there really some bias towards the sedan as an inferior car. I don't see it, like I said having owned a Z and the sedan, and kind of skipping over the coupe (not in a bad way, just that it is probably between the Z and sedan in the FM lineup), it comes down to personal taste and preference of 2 doors vs 4.
Honestly, one reason I sold the Z was that when I got it I had my Maxima, but do to an accident and hail storm (Z was in the garage), I decided to get rid of it. After the fact I regreted not having 4 doors sometimes. I had no particular need (no kids in sight) and that was not the reason I traded, but as my only car 2 doors in a PITA sometimes.
I see the coupe as a midlife crisis car and see a lot of women driving it, as I do the Z. I see a lot of suburban families driving the sedan. So, the case could be made that niether is really that cool.
Needless to say I am extremly happy with my decision and would not change it for any reason....
