rusting already...

I checked under the hood one day and look what I found. The car will be 2 years old in September. Anyone else see rust already?

Can you post a pic of that rust? Where exactly is it located in the engine compartment? Some suspension pieces will get rust right away.

Is that under the hood? I thought the hood was all aluminum, hmmm....

I will be talking to the dealer soon. I have a feeling they will say that the rust warranty covers perforation only. The hood (top and bottom) is aluminum, but the hood striker re-inforcement is steel or else it would not be rusting.

Re: rusting already...

You can see how the pieces of metal are pop-riveted together? I think this is because the outer skin is aluminum but the frame structure underneath is steel. I am pretty sure that you cannot weld aluminum to steel.....hince the rivets. This is the only reason I can come up with as to you found rust on an "aluminum" hood. The bottom line is get it fixed before it spreads and keep us updated as to what happens.

Re: rusting already...

Sorry to see that you are experiencing a rusting issue. Out of curiosity, what area do you live in? I'm just wondering if you are in a predominately wet / humid climate.

Re: rusting already...

I live in Canada, north of Toronto. Living in Canada you learn quickly that any "exposed" metal will rust. I have had other cars, including a FORD Taurus SHO which is notorious for rusting even when there is no exposed metal and I have never seen rust like this. Correct me if I am wrong, Nissan/Infiniti even recommends not to rust proof because it might accelerate rusting i.e. trap water/salt in certain areas of the vehicle if a product is applied. Therefore, I did not bother oil spraying this car. I did oil spray the SHO maybe that's why it was in great shape until the end.

I was looking at that spot under my hood, weird, I couldn't get a magnet to stick to anything in there, not even the rivets, wonder where that rust is coming from, I think I will look for a stronger magnet tomorrow and try once more. Funny you should mention the Ford, my last car, a '00 Mustang GT Vert, had some minor rust on the front plate on the top, pretty surface stuff, and we live in a relatively dry area.

Re: rusting already...

I hadn't seen that one before, but there's also another place you may find rust.

Look around the lip of the fuel filler neck when the cap is off. I was getting ready to fill up one day and noticed what looked like "crusty" rust around the bottom part of the lip. I wiped around the area with a clean cloth, and sure enough it was rust. I've left it alone so that I can show it to the service manager on my next visit. I'd be curious if anyone else finds rust in the same area.

My Gsedan just turned 2 yesterday...

Re: rusting already...(pics included!)

I just went and took these pics. I have rust under the hood in the same place, but not as bad. Sorry the pic is bad, I couldn't get a good closeup to be in focus:

Here's a pic of the rust around the filler neck:

Anyone else have rust in these areas?

Regards,

John

I don't remember - my memory is a bit rusty.

(Seriously, though, I'll check tomorrow.)

Re: rusting already...(pics included!)

I also have the rust on the neck of the filler tube, but not as bad as yours. I also noticed underneath the car, rust is forming where the rear bumper joins to the body of the car. I think that I will have my car oil sprayed this year to try to "slow down" the rusting process. My only worry is that the oily sprays like "Krown" or "Rust Check" make the rubber on the car swell up and wrinkle. Any advice on good rust proofing for the early rusting G35s?
