Measuring rotor thickness with micrometer...question

Hi...

I was reading the forum about people using micrometers to check the rotor thickness. My car has about 34k and the front is on the 2nd pads and rear is on original pads. Just curious, can you measure the rotor thickness without taking the wheels off? The micrometer looks like the shape of a horse shoe "u shape" so I am not sure if it fits through the spokes? I mean it's not a pain to take the wheels off but if not that's even better. Then I may pick up one.

Thanks...

You can also use a Vernier Caliper to measure

Slightly thinner profile than a micrometer. Whether or not you can do it with the wheel on depends on the brake. with your '05, you may be able to do it.

If not, just pull the wheel off. 5 mins of work.

Be careful with the vernier caliper -- they tend to measure the ridge at the outside edge of the rotor instead of the actual wear area.

I was actually coming back here just to edit my post and say this.

My calipers have a recess behind the jaws that is down .100", so i could get over the ridge with mine.

So the OP needs to make sure he measures the pad swept area, and not the ridge on the edge of the rotor
