tranny drain and fill question DIY
hopefully this same question wasnt answered. so im manning up to do my tranny drain and fill on my 2005 AT. and was looking at the DIY.. bare with me since i have no experience at all.
if im correct bythebay uses in total 6qts of tranny fluid (including the extra being flushed) i saw he first flushed roughly 3 1/2 qts. he then later flushes another 2 1/2 a total of 6 qts. did i miss anything or is it really that simple? the thing is that i find weird is how he flushed 3 1/2 and adds 4.. then flushes 2 1/2 but then adds 2 more.. leaving a total of 3 1/2 in there if i am correct.
only reason why this video is a lil more confusing (maybe just to me) is because he doesnt talk as much on this one compared to others.
thanks to anyone who can asnwer this to me

It's really simple, so don't overthink this. Tranny fluid gains more volume when hot so that's why you'll see people replacing less than they take out. What I would do if I were you would be to drain the pan ~ 3.5 quarts then refill until the dipstick reads full. This is called a drain and fill which most dealers do for the 30,000 mile and 60,000 mile service procedures. If you want to replace all of the fluid drive 50-100 miles after the first drain and fill, repeat, drive another 50-100 miles, and repeat. That way you'll have replaced the majority of your fluid in a short time. I believe the manual says there are 10.75 qts. total in the tranny.
This process is actually easier than changing your oil since there's no filter to mess with.
Good luck.

Well answered, i just did this about 3 weeks ago and honestly it is really easy.. Watch the video if you really are nervous. And if you do not feel comfortable, go buy one gallon of water and measure it out. I replaced only 6 quarts of the fluid (by doing the start the car and have the pump drain some for me method), but WOW, what a difference in shift smoothness. The transmission honestly feels like it went from shifting like a 15 year old automatic Civic, to a new BMW. IMO, it is well worth the money to buy the fluid.
