G vs. 540i (1997)

My friend has a 1997 540i lowered with a remus exhaust. while it may have a great engine and bmw trademark handling, which car (the G or this one) is better? because in the previous posts, the G has been compared with bmw's, but never with the model that is the most similar in size (the 5 series). I'd race my friend, but i'm still in break in period (375 miles), and i don't want to embarrass myself by keeping it under 4000. i'd appreciate some input until i can race him legitmately. thanks

Is his the manual or auto. The manual will kill the sedan for sure but the auto it a close race.

2001 BMW 540ia 0-60 in only 6.3s? Last time I thought the BMW 540ia can do 0-60 in 6.0s. And what's up with the 15s 1/4 mile on the BMW? I don't think those times are accurate for the 540i.

Re: G vs. 540i (1997)

I met up with a 540i on the way home from work today. We started off from a dead stop (traffic light) and he immediately had me by a 1/4 car length. He continued to gain on me, by 3rd gear he was about a 1/2 car length ahead and by 4th he was about 3/4 car length ahead. We both had to back off at this point because of traffic. He moved ahead and I turned off.

I'm in an auto sedan and had the VDC off. His was manual, or at least I thought it was by the way his tires chirped coming off the line and going into second.

Sorry guys....I did my best. One things for sure, I hope I get another shot at him in the future.

One last thing. If anyone feels like lecturing me about street racing, don't bother to reply because I'll ignore your *** :-)

With 7100 miles on the G, I won't hesitate to open it up and have no problem using the tiptronic to push/pull everything she's got.

I think just letting the sedan go in D shifts faster than using the tiptronic.. also.. if you wanna race from a stoping point.. makesure you rev the engine up to around 3000 rpm with the break then let go It'll help alot..takeoff quicker.

I'll try it in D next time. I usually (try to) launch at/around 1500r, and will also try it at 3000r.

I raced three.
1st - 19's I beat his arase bad.
2nd - It was close, looked sloppy on the shifts, but I pulled on him higher up.
3rd - See yah, thats what he said to me as he left me 4 car lengths.

I walked an auto down that was trying to show off. He floored it about 3 car lengths in front of me and I reeled him in and put about 4 cars on him from 40-120. They aren't that fast. The auto's at the track usually run 14.7-15.0 and the 6-speeds run from 14.3-14.6.

The nice thing about the 540's is that they have about twice as many amenities as the 3's, and they can keep up.
