yes like i was saying 03-04 pipes are more of a T VS the HR pipes which are more like a Y. but 04.5 - 06 AWD sedans have a Y designed pipe
I think this was discussed in a previous thread somewhere because i remember having the same question. As far as im concerned our stock Y-pipes look way too similar to the HR/Z ones to spend time getting our rusted bolts off and replacing them, etc. I can't imagine any change other than a very slight sound difference. But i guess you already went this far to find one!

i took it on step further now and picked up a coupe mid pipe as well.
LOL. but some sedan guys want to get the 05/06 mid pipes for better noise and from what i read the noise is just about the same.
now i have no idea as to if i should install of both of these or not. I want just a bit more noise in the exhaust, a touch above stock g35 coupes/ FX35 's exhaust note. I'm thinking this should get me there but in my mind i think rather sell both and spend $777 on the MD exhaust...
I would be beyond pissed if i installed both the HR y pipe and Coupe Mid-pipe and saw no difference in tone... honestly i've came to accept that this AWD turd is not the fastest thing nor will it ever be. I'm only down for the ascetics now and sounds.

These might not be the quickest cars around, but you should consider doing some auto-x stuff. It will restored your faith in the car. It might not be the ideal car for auto-x, but it sure is fun to explore the capabilities of the chassis.
I guarantee that your car will be quite a bit louder than stock if you do the HR Y-pipe, keep your OEM midpipe, and add the smaller 03/04 muffler. The 05/06 muffler is about 15% larger than the 03/04 can. The coupe midpipe doesn't sound as clean. Believe me, I've run both.

hm... now i have to go dig for a 03/04 muffler..
can you define "clean"
I'm also interested in what you mean by "not sounding as clean". Its not like this mod can ever add any drone. He's trying to get a slightly deeper/more aggressive note just like everyone else here who runs these oem-type setups. From my personal experience, the coupe middy created a slightly deeper/better note than stock.
The coupe resonator baffles are designed to enhance the sound characteristics of the cross-flow style muffler used on coupe. The sedan midpipe baffles are designed to match that of the sedan's straight through muffler.
Pairing a coupe midpipe with a sedan muffler results in a louder exhaust and a little more warble. However, it sounds nothing like a coupe. There are certain rpms where the midpipe has some drone and even a little rasp. An 05/06 sedan midpipe paired to an 03/04 muffler has a deeper, slightly louder, and more fluid sound. There is no rasp and there is no drone. The sound is very muscular.
Also, the coupe midpipe lacks a bracket to use the passenger side hanger just forward of the differential. The lack of this hanger creates a little vibration in the lower rpms that isn't there when running the sedan midpipe. On a coupe, the muffler is supported by 3 large hangers which steady the midpipe and reduce vibrations.
Here's the 05/06 y-pipe paired an 03/04 muffler. With the addition of the HR y-pipe, the sound is even deeper and sexier. It's a perfect setup for someone who wants a very sporty sound without drawing much attention.

Ive seen this vid, sounds good. Not to completely throw the topic off, but I am actually about to buy an HKS rear...i hope it doesnt create too much rasp since it will be paired with my coupe middy (+ 5/16 spacer, ztube, JWT, stock Y pipe). At this point my car is pretty much completely silent unless i really let on the gas...so i dont think it will create a drastic change...

there are plenty of videos with coupe mids and HKS. wannabe guy posted like 50 million of his. it sounds good and all but for $400 this would be a very expensive mod with no gains VS going MD at $800 with some gains but a little more noise.
Only thing i hate about audio clips is that there is no baseline at all. some clips you can hear wind and some dont. That alone makes a huge difference in audio clip. Like dave's video the car sounds nice and all. but comparing noises that i know like how the door closes and how far away i can hear his footsteps, means that the video is louder then what is really is.
But eh, i'll install this Ypipe when i have the time first. rather then installing both y and mid together and see how i like it for a month if not then i'll just go back under and do a mid
05-06 sedans with HR pipes
I have an 06X(and a 04 coupe) with an Aftermarket Y Pipe for a G37/370Z. The pipe was well built and installed easily. I purchased it on Ebay for $250 but they are much cheaper now. I bought the pipe because my original was broken and this was the cheaper route and I must say that I am happy with the result. The exhaust tone is deeper and more exotic but I definitely feel a loss in performance at low RPMs but a very noticeable pick up in the midrange. The only other performance mod on the car is a Z tube with the Jim Wolf intake. The pipe BTW, is the exact shape of the AWD y pipe.
