Lightbulb Question after installing after market exhaust - Smoke at higher RPMs

Hey Everyone,

Alright, so I installed a custom dual exhaust on my car last September, and I posted the install and everything on here awhile ago. Since that time, the car seems to run a little rich, as I'm sure a lot of cars do after putting on an exhaust that's not OEM. You can smell some gas fumes for a little bit after starting it, but it goes away after a bit usually.

It was pointed out to me by a few people, as well as someone on a G35 cruise, that when I booked it into the higher RPMs of a gear and switched, some smoke would come out of the exhaust. Even if you punch it in first into like 4500RPM then put it in neutral, smoke still comes out everytime. It only seems to happen at the higher RPMs. I checked my oil consumption and it doesn't seem to be burning much extra oil at all, there's no huge jump or anything like that. This never happened when I had the OEM exhaust on, only when I put the custom exhaust on.

My question is this, do I have to get to ECU re-tuned or something because of the new exhaust, or is there something else you can think of that would cause the smoke coming out of the exhaust?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

ummm... i have 3inch all around... same thing... do you have aftermarket cats? you're probably smokin because you dont have a resonator? or something that filters it in between?

I have the OEM cats. The way it's setup is the cats go straight into a muffler under the middle of the car, then two pipes straight back, that's it. No more resonator or anything else.

I guess this is just the way it is after installing an aftermarket exhaust, but I wanted to make sure there wasn't something I could do to make it better (I guess the only option sounds like it's re-adding the OEM stuff lol).

Here's some pics showing the setup.

Looking from the front of the car back.

I would have done it way diff than that.

Should have elminated the stock Y and had it both exahust pipes dump into a magnaflow resonated X pipe and then dual it out like you have. Having it go down to 1 pipe from the restrictive stock Y and then into a box that splits again seems all too counterproductive.

That thing has to be L O U D also.

I can always change it up later, but at the time I just wanted it completed and those were the parts we had. It doesn't bother me at all.

Yup it's loud, and although most people don't like loud, I do lol.

What color is the smoke? That is key.

Blue = oil
Black = fuel (rich)
Whit = coolant

I assume the exhaust is old and broken in? If it's new it could by oils and other byproducts from manufacture baking off. This usually last a month or so.

If it's oldermthan than, its unrelated to the exhaust and more of an engine issue. You could be running rich. Any codes stored?

Any sound clips btw?

It's like a brownish/blackish color.

and it's never thrown any codes.

I've had it since last September so it's broken in for sure.

If it's running rich, is it possible to maybe re-tune the ECU?

Here's a video of the exhaust. It sounds 10 times better in person, everyone's told me that, so yeah, take the sound with a grain of salt.
You can see at 34seconds the smoke I'm talking about. It seems to do it way more often now though. The video was taken last year.

well sir, i had that same problem when i went straight pipe. but i only had the single exit. driving normal was okay, but flooring it at high rpm, the guy behind me couldnt see anything due to the smoke. lol. i still have straight pipe now, but just the muffler. somehow it's less smoke.

That actually sounds good.

I saw the smoke in one shot before your shift. Def looks like a rich condition but without knowing your air/fuel mixture it's hard to say really.

Thanks. I have to get a better camera or mic to record the sound with, because it sounds 10 times better in person. I'll figure it out some time haha.

Yeah I have no idea what the mixture is. Maybe some tune would help it, but no idea. Trial and error I guess.
