New Member - 2006 DG 6MT

Just wanted to get started posting over here. I just acquired a 2006 6MT sedan (DG on black) about 2 weeks ago. I have been lurking on the forums for about two weeks just reading and learning. The car is replacing a 2001 BMW 540i/6. I am enjoying the car thus far and actually plan on doing a few mods to it. I have already got a set of un-revised Z springs coming in the mail from another member here, and I would like to add an OEM front lip and some sort of rear spoiler and possibly some sort of rear lip/spoiler.

I have alot of experience building and tuning turbo BMW's, RX7's and DSM's but I am hoping to keep myself from dumping that kinda money into the G35.

Pictures of the G

Couple pictures of past cars

1989 RX7 Turbo II (this car had an LT1 swapped into it later too)

Niiiiiiice E36 M3...one of these days I'll find an unmolested one and start molesting it .

PM Ionic for a replica OEM front lip. Sway bars and a 5/16" spacer would be nice starter mods.

I thought I read the spacers did not make a difference on the REV-UP engines?

^^

Dan, you are one of those rarest of creatures: a n00b (well to this board anyway) who can search and read. Well done.

^ Spacers do, but I forgot to mention that they would work really really well with a MREV2 manifold for 6MT's.

If I do any mods passed a cat-back and the K&N drop in, it will consist of a turbo kit.

Welcome from Ky!
Nice rides

I got a NIB rear trunk spoiler (Aero, like SwivelHip's), but you'll need to have it painted DG. PM me if interested.

GL!

Another welcome from KY! You have good taste in cars, sir. I was this close to getting a 540i just like yours before I got the G. Tell me what I missed out on versus the G...

I would honestly have to say the 540i/6 is probably an all around nicer car when both were new. Keep in mind a 2001 540i/6 retailed for more than a new 2006 G35 Sedan also. My 540i/6 has 121k miles on it and it has held up pretty well. The cooling systems and bushings fail early/often on the V8 E39's but other than that they are fairly well built cars.

My G is newer under 50,000miles. It has an LSD, its lighter, it feels more sporty, though I think alot of that has to do with the VQ being a revvier engine. That is a plus and a minus. Even though in a drag race I feel the cars would be pretty close, the 540 has MUCH more usable power around town 300hp/270tq in the G vs. 280hp/320tq. I personally feel that the Japanese cars will be much less maintenance intensive than the BMW's especially considering the mileage difference in the two. I do pretty much all my own work, so less time whoring on a beater car is better.

The verdict so far, I'd prefer a 2003 Imola Red E39 M5 to the G in pretty much every aspect EXCEPT I'd have to pay $10,000 more for an older car with more miles and thats just not something I am willing to do right now.

EDIT: The BIG plus the G has over the BMW, the shifter. Really its what sold the car when I drove it. The BMW shifter is literally like driving a UPS truck.

I was hoping that you would take away that lingering regret that I have over not getting the 540. Thanks for nothing

Seriously, thanks for the analysis. I do most of my own work, too, so the lure of less maintenance sold me as well.

Nice, clean G. Good find on the 6MT too, those are hard to come-by. Good first mods as well.

And good luck trying not to burn holes in your pockets.
