Same thing seemed to happen to me just yesterday. Car has been fine. All of a suddent my wife said, "what's that smell, smells like coolant". Looked down, temp pegged, service light was on and steam and cooland was coming out of the passenger side of the hood just above the headlight. Have not had time to get it in yet to have someone check it. tow truck guy thought it looked as if there was something missing from the top of the resevoir where there is a small square valve type opening. That's where coolant seemed to come from. Radiator levels we a tiny bit low, but I could see coolant still in it.

I had the same issue. A few weeks ago, I was overheating and that was due to the radiator fans not working. The dealer replaced those with the warranty they have on them. That was 3 weeks ago. Now, the same exact thing that happened to Cookies happened to me. Needle on H, then it jerked and check engine light on. I hope it's an easy thermostat fix because even after they replaced my fans, the gauge still jumped a little and was close to H but never corsets the line. Could it be a faulty thermostat?

T-stat, fans and radiator cap should always be the first things checked-easiest and cheapest options.
We have aluminum blocks. They had advantages but one of the disadvantages is the ability to warp quicker than aluminum blocks. Do not keep driving if your temp gauge is pasts 3/4. The last 3 notches before the top are dangerous - about 260*+ and it will not take too long to warp the heads.
Other possible causes: head gasket, bad water pump, leaking or clogged radiator.

My temp would rise and fall periodically. But on Saturday, I think it had enough. I guess I didnt notice in time and as soon as I looked, the needle was at H then I heard something, it jerked, and the check engine light came on. If the fans were working, it could either be the radiator or the t-stat?
