Q: on 05 6 speed

I'm new here. I'm thinking of a 05 4 dr, but they are not out yet so just tested a 04 6 speed 2 dr to see how the 6 sp would feel. I notice the shift *** shakes a lot, it's that common? Also the feel of the gear box is solid but comparing to a 330i where it is soft/smooth and has a very solid feel when put into gear, the G is not as good to my opinion. Was told the 05 is going to improve to match the better feel of the BMW, is this true?
I have driven a few standard cars before. I believe BMW has the BEST feel followed by Miata. What do you guys think of the G comparing to the 2?

Re: Q: on 05 6 speed

The 05 is supposed to shift a lot better; it gets new synchros.

I don't know if that will get rid of the shaking though. I kind of like the shaking a bit, but it could be a little less notchy.

Either way, not a big deal to me.

The shaking is completely normal because the shifter linkage is directly connected to the transaxle...I think. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Well, in a RWD, it would be the transmission, not the transaxle. I think there would be some movement in the shifter, not sure how much though, even an AT you can sometimes feel it, been my experience with older vehicles anyway.

skylinefever:

I believe the S2000 probably has the best shifter followed by BMW and the Miata (possibly in different order).

Thanks for the reply!!
Does S2000 feel even better than BMW? That's great. Never tried it, hope will have a chance to. Is that similar to TSX? Should be able to try that one out no problem.
I think the 05 looks better than 04, may be just me. I find it looks closer to a 2 dr (which I like a lot) than the 04. But the wheels... and those big 18's are going to put lots of rotation mass on the car and eat up most of the HP increase.

Re: Q: on 05 6 speed

I have an 04.5 6MT sedan, and my first impression was that the shifter did vibrate a lot - so that seems to be normal for this car judging from others have stated before too.

I like the vibrating sensation of the shifter. It was one of the selling points when I test drove it. (and no, I don't own a vibrator at home ).

Miatas do have a nuce feeling shifter. The best feeling shifter I've ever felt was a mustang cobra with a Pro 5.0 shifter in it. WOW! It felt like your arm was an extension of the transmission. Rock Solid and positive engagement.

Re: Q: on 05 6 speed

stang has nice shifting feel? Not questioning you but I tried a 4.7L before and the shifting feel was... the power of that car is CRAZY for sure, my foot shakes after a test drive. (that was years ago before I got the chance to drive higher power cars)
Is the 05 really going to improve by much and matches the feeling of a BMW? Also any aftermarket parts that are available now to improve that? like short shifter or something, althought the stock one is quite low already.

Re: Q: on 05 6 speed

Aftermarket shifters for Mustangs have spring loaded positive stop shift mechanisms, and also eliminate the rubber bushing between the lever and the shift mechanism. The result is a very positive feeling shift, but with more NVH transmitted to the cabin.

Yup, Fireball is correct.
I would even say that Miata's is also better than BMW 3's.
The G35's isn't as direct as an S2K's but still decent (it's a world better than the 80's Maxima et al). It has to handle MUCH more torque than any of the other cars in it's class.

I drove both Miata and S2k before and they are two of the best manual cars. Generally speaking, Honda made better manual feel than Nissan's

The S2000's shifter is better than the TSX's. It's been stated by every car magazine that I've read as being the best shifter on the planet. There's only about 2 inches of travel in any direction and the action is like a rifle bolt: precise and direct.

I had a 2000 which was criticized as being a bit notchy (but I liked it). The shifting was made a bit smoother for 2001 and made even smoother for 2004 (when the gearing and synchros were changed).

Well it's all up to interpretation I guess...I think Honda is still on top as far as shifting feel goes. I would also say that the G35 shifts better than my BMW 540 6 speed which I eventually updated with an M3 shifter with little improvement albeit shorter throws. Whatever the case the 3 series shifts very well too.....can't comment on the '05 G35 as I have not yet driven one. I can tell you the worst is an older Jetta... with the rubbery/sloppy numb shifter you can hardly tell if it's in gear.
