05 HP?

Where and how do they squeeze out 20-25 more ponies out of the same engine for the new G? I'm not much of a wrench-head; so can someone please explain it to me. Is it simply modifying the engine or what?

Re: 05 HP?

I was wondering the same thing crazy, but you know, I had read somewhere before, maybe on this forum, that the '03-'04's were underated by Infiniti, anyone else remember reading this?

I heard the same thing. However, I also heard that they changed the exhaust cams and some mods to their ECU. By the way their are companys JWT, Nismo that have modifed Cams so you can do similar. Technosquare can do the similar to the ECU. Doing this should also increase your torque a little (the 05 has no increase in torque).

Re: 05 HP?

I think the '05 has variable valve timing on the exhaust valves. If that it the case, it's far more than a more agressive cam.

From Infiniti:

"For 2005, several modifications have been made including a new electronic exhaust valve timing, improved cooling and air flow and strengthening of several components...

...The VQ engine design includes a long list of advanced systems, including a continuously variable valve timing control system, a “noiseless” timing chain for quiet operation, a structurally reinforced aluminum engine block and an electronically controlled “drive-by-wire” throttle system. It also features a modular engine design, microfinished crank journals and cam lobes, and molybdenum coated lightweight pistons."

Re: 05 HP?

The 05 auto model incresed torque by 10 lb-ft, haven't found out how.

Re: 05 HP?

I believe it is with the same method (Cam +ECU). You can adjust either of these to vary both hp and torque. I think Infiniti choose to do the AT and Man different to optimize the performance from both (ie Man can get better use out of hp and Auto can get more out of torque).

I think Nissan realized that the people who are going to buy 350Z are not the same as the people who are going to buy G35c who are not the same as those buying G35s and so on for each of these with 6MT or AT. So they are optimizing each to achieve max performance. Sometimes car manufactures will detune or lower performance on purpose so their ponycar (intended) will not be beat by some of their own cars. I for one am pleased with this new direction and I'm sure 350Z or coupe owners could care less that the 4 door has the same outputs now!
