making the sedan's rear seats fold down?

has anyone figured out a way to get it so you can move the rear seats in the sedan to have more trunk room? i don' think they are supposed to fold down, but it seems like a big oversight by Infiniti...

There is no way to do this.
There are structural braces behind the seat.

so there's not way to cut a hole or take that panel out in the back?

Not unless you want to compromise the structural integrity

That is one thing that I miss - rear folding seats. Too bad that they could not get that feature in without detracting from the car's performance. Of course, now I have an amp blocking the small pass through too, so I really gave up any long item capacity.

I agree.
I'm sure it just boils down to $$$, since other products such as Audi A4 were designed to have the fold down.

if i remember correctly, you can fold back seats down for I35... but not G35.
Don't really understand the reason behind it.

That is why Infiniti intorduced FX34/45 :D

The I35 and G35 are on completely different platforms. The FM platform the G35 is on is more performance oriented which is why there is structural bracing in the back to maintain chasis rigidity.

Well said, dklau33. ! :)

Didn't the rear seats of non-premium models fold down? ... like the coupes?

Gordgee Dec 12, 2004 12:07 AM

I think one consideration were the reclining rear seats which even many luxury cars do not have. Infiniti may have designed the sedan with these in mind, which may have compromised the option of full fold-down rear seats. Of course, they may have just 'cheaped out' to keep the costs down! :p

Personally, I really like the reclining rear seats, but there are many times that I wish I could fold the seat-backs down as on more prosaic sedans. For the price, I guess you can't have everything! :(

I've heard that the base G35 [fabric seats] rear seats do fold down. But my base 6MT sedan with leather [no premium package] still can not fold down the rear seats.

That's interesting. Anyone who has a G with rear fold down seats please chime in. I was under the impression that none of the G's have that.

bad news

So I called service to ask them about folding down the rear seats and they said that you don't f with the back panel - it is a structural brace and part of the body. so much in fact that if it gets damaged in an accident, the car is usually quantified as "totalled" by insurance companies - time to find a roof rack
