Hitting rev limit in auto-manual mode?
I'm sorry if there is already a post but I culd not find it and neither know how to word it poperly, but I recently was driving my 03 automatic and popped it into manual shift mode and accidently shifted to late into second gear which made the rpms hit the rev limit a few times. Is this bad for the car? I turned the car off and let it sit just incase it would cause any overheating problems. Appreciate any invoices!

Try not to do it too often, but every once in a while shouldn't do any damage.
Here's my invoice. PayPal me $20 for the words of wisdom please.

I did this quite often when I was learning how to shift properly, since we have the lag in our auto's.. Still trying to convince my girlfiend that manual mode is not for towing trailers! I am stuck in the south ya know!
Ohh and only $20! Thats a deal, I think he charged me at least $35 for my HFC questions!

Try not to do it, but that's what it's there for. Doesn't mean it's the best thing for the engine however

unless you have a tune with the limiter set to high.
But you really don't want to. Not with a limiter that pulls fuel and timing. Last thing you want to do is run lean under load.
The rev limiter is there as a safety measure..but you definitely don't want to actually utilize it.

I do recall when it went to 8k rpms the engine like flickered on and off, so i know i had knock/detonation going on. (thats why i was worried for the longest time) But it's been 2 yrs now and everything is still good (knocks on wood)
OEM engine tachometers are notorious for being inaccurate and lagging. Some are better than others. It's why most serious racers either use an aftermarket tach, or a shift light setup.
I know this is an old thread but the question is related.....
So basically if you are in manual mode first gear and give it full throttle, you'll reach redline and stay there until you let off or gear up?
Just wondering because the VW passat 03 I had and our current 06 Jetta - when in manual mode - will gear up as soon as you hit redline, or just before, when in manual mode even without you touching the shifter. It also won't let you downshift till the revs for that lower gear are safely below redline.

Depends on the car and it's transmission logic.
Even between the 03-06 sedans, the logic is different. The way the 03's work is not the same way as the way the 06 work.
I have downshifted my '06 into the rev limiter.
