JDM Tail Light Mod For <$20

As you know the JDM tails are quite pricey. I love the amber turn signal. A while back I got some amber LED bulbs (must be LED otherwise standard ones won't project the amber color, it will still be red). They look awesome at night, however, daytime visibility is horrible, sometimes as if you don't even have the turn signal on. I do have a few things in mind, perhaps you guys can help me out.

This is the bulb I have

You think if I have a better LED bulb I'd be able to get that proper light output during the daytime with the sun glaring at it? It would be similar to like this, except amber instead of white.

For those of you curious here's how it looks.

I took a video at night time, but the output of what is visible in person is not identical as in the video I had taken so I didn't upload it. In the video it looks whitish/yellow when in person it looks yellow.

Yes, if you are willing to modify the mounting base area there are several extremely bright LED options. They are pricey but well worth it for the safety IMO.

That's pretty cool Levon, good stuff.

That is a good alternative for folks who don't want to wait for them to come in stock and pay the extra money. They don't look like the JDM ones when they are off (JDMs are amber when off), but similar when the turn signal is engaged.

Correct, Marcus. They don't. The picture was there to show the lenses are red, but the lights still blink amber. I originally intended to take a night video, but didn't think one could tell if it was an OEM or JDM tail light.

Tim, what sort of modification did you have in mind?

I checked out V-LED's as 5150DS pointed out. Also checked out Putco as I heard those were good as well. Any personal experience between the two?

I'm also wondering which VLED bulb would be sufficient enough while keeping costs low (try getting it around the $20-30 mark for those who want to keep it inexpensive). But from the looks of it this mod will actually cost under $100. Probably around $50-65 for the bulbs, about $15-20 for the resistor and shipping/tax.

These are the bulbs I had in mind.

From the 2 Putco's above, one of the reviews said that the Nova (which Putco claims to have 3x the output of the other LED bulb I posted) is barely brighter than OEM, although it carries a lifetime warranty which is a nice option over the 90 days that the rest of the bulbs carry.

I took apart my 03 tails and found the lens is actually amber, on red taillights. Pretty cool. So I would expect minimal loss in brightness vs red leds

I have the same issue. My amber leds make the blinker extremely dim during the day. but it looks awesome with that amber bulb. the space on the taillight where you insert the bulb is very small is it eliminates many of the bulbs with the 10 smd leds which is what we need to make the signal visable in daylight. unless you custom mod the opening. Anyways keep me posted if you find a better solution

I recommend that you guys try these bulbs:

http://www.vleds.com/bulb/7443-7440-led/7443-amber.html
http://www.vleds.com/platinum-amber-...se-1-pair.html

I have the latter in red, and it is the first bulb which I found to be brighter than incandescents.

None at all. It's on the backburner right now. It is something I wanna do but really got other things so I'll end up getting to it eventually. Hopefully someone can try one of the bulbs mentioned in the above post. I was thinking of going with the first one and pairing it up with a resistor.
