Definitive JDM Mirror FAQ and Info

There are about 4 threads that are, simply, confusing, about JDM mirrors and what you need to do to install them.

Those threads are confusing because myself, alongside a few other members, all kind of figured it out as we went along, while talking in those threads about it, well now most of us have finished the install, and I'm taking the time to put the combined knowledge in this thread.

If anyone with experience sees error in my posts please LMK and I'll fix it, this is meant to be for DEFINITIVE answers on these mirrors, so there can't be mistakes in this post!

Let's get rolling:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

TERMINOLOGY USED IN THIS THREAD:

JDM = JAPANESE DOMESTIC MARKET
USDM = U.S. DOMESTIC MARKET
V35 = MAIN CHASSIS CODE FOR THE G35 COUPE AND SEDAN. IN JAPAN OUR CARS ARE REFERRED TO AS 'SKYLINE', 250 GT, 300 GT, 350 GT, BUT THEY ARE ALL A V35 CHASSIS.
RIGHT SIDE = RIGHT SIDE OF THE CAR, WHEN SITTING IN THE DRIVER SEAT
LEFT SIDE = LEFT SIDE OF THE CAR, WHEN SITTING IN THE DRIVER SEAT

(NOTE ABOUT THE LAST TWO, I WILL NOT USE THE TERMS 'PASSENGER' AND 'DRIVER' SIDE. THIS IS VERY CONFUSING BECAUSE THE DRIVING POSITION IS REVERSED IN JAPAN, AND WE'RE TALKING ABOUT JDM MIRRORS HERE. PLEASE DO NOT USE THESE TERMS IN THIS THREAD, IT WILL CONFUSE EVERYONE.)

What you need:

1. JDM motoroized folding Mirrors from a 1st generation V35
These are most commonly found on Ebay, but if you have a connection in Japan-land you are ahead of the game!
The mirror covers (cosmetic painted piece) CAN BE CHANGED to your stock ones, BUT it's more work, you'll learn about this more below. Just keep it in mind during purchase, you might need to paint the covers, buy the same color, or plan to take them apart to swap.

From now on, I'll refer to this piece only as the MIRROR COVER. For reference, I'm holding the MIRROR COVER in my left hand here:

2. V35 Power Folding mirror Switch with Harness

Size: 31.6 KB

You can wire this in without the above switch and harness, but it's not simple, and won't look OEM.

FYI: There is a JDM trim piece that a couple members have purchased so you don't have to cut a spot for the JDM switch. HOWEVER, it's been said that this piece is different and DOES NOT FIT THE USDM SETUP!!!!
Here's that trim piece with the switch installed:

Based off that, I'd recommend you DO NOT waste the money on this trim piece.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OK, you have the parts, NOW WHAT? First you need to know some stuff. You have a couple decisions to make (Obviously you should decide this before you purchase your mirrors, etc, if you can!!)

NOTE: ALL OPTIONS INCLUDE CUTTING AND WIRING IN THE JDM SWITCH

Option #1:

Install the mirrors without modification. Then all you have to do is cut a hole for the JDM switch and do the wiring.

PROS:
-Easiest route.

CONS:
-Mirror viewing angles will be off, possibly so far they will be unsafe.
-Right side mirror may not fold in as much as the left, unsure of this 100%, but it stands to reason based off what I know
-If you have Heated Mirrors, you will lose them, JDM mirrors DO NOT come with heated option
-If you didn't get the same colour mirror covers, you will need to paint them
-The mirror 'depth perception' will be wrong, the mirrors themselves are slightly different left to right.

Option #2:

Swap the Right side Triangular base. This is what the trinagular bases look like:

Info: The bases on the JDM mirrors are opposite, because of the reversed driving position. The mounting angles are different. It's a slight difference, but when mounted the difference in the viewing angle is huge. Using the USDM base on the right side will give you the SAME viewing angle as before, even though you're using JDM mirrors now.

PROS:
-Much safer viewing angle on right side of car
-Mirrors will fold in evenly
-Minimal amount of additional work considering the large benefits

CONS:
-Left side viewing angle will still be off
-If you have Heated Mirrors, you will lose them, JDM mirrors DO NOT come with heated option
-If you didn't get the same colour mirror covers, you will need to paint them
-The mirror 'depth perception' will be wrong, the mirrors themselves are slightly different left to right.

Option #3

Disassemble both Left and Right mirrors, this involves taking the mirror off with a heat gun, spatula, and disassembling/swapping components.

PROS:
-Allows you to swap your Heated mirrors in
- Allows you to swap the mirror covers so you can use your stock ones (no painting)
- Allows you to swap the triangular bases however you choose, giving you whatever viewing angle/fold in amount that best suits you SEE VIEWING ANGLE INFO BELOW FOR THOSE OPTIONS
-Allows you to swap Mirrors to the USDM ones, giving you the proper depth perception

CONS:
- Much more in depth, breaking the mirror is a possibility
-Need to run wires for Heated mirrors through the JDM motor, etc

---------------------------------------------------------------

Viewing angle Info/Options:

Option A:

LEFT: Use JDM trinagular base
RIGHT: Use JDM triangular base

RESULT:
Right mirror wont fold in as much as the left
Viewing angles will be off on both sides
Right side mirror probably won't fold in as much as the left

Option B:

LEFT: Use JDM triangular base
RIGHT: Use USDM triangular base

RESULT:
Right mirror will have correct viewing angle
Left mirror will still be wrong, you will have to adjust the mirror all the way out, it looks strange but you CAN get used to it and drive this way
Mirrors will fold in evenly

Option C:

LEFT: Use USDM triangular base
RIGHT: Use USDM triangular base

RESULT:
Both mirrors will have correct viewing angle
Left mirror won't fold in as much as the right side

No matter what you do, if you want to use the switch, you kind of need the harness. You can solder wires directly to the pins if you have to, and use shrink tube to cover them afterwards.

when i did this, didnt realize the triangular bases were different, used the jdm ones. mirrors are jacked to hell and you cannot really use them unless you shift your entire body over and this is already with the mirrors folded to the max. going to get them changed to the usdm bases. do not go with option A, your mirrors will be useless and dangerous.

also for coupes, the trim is different the switch is stacked on each other, if you do have a coupe and dont want to cut anything get the trim for coupes that has the stacked top and bottom switch and make sure the switch you buy is also appropriate.

for the people who have it all wired up, how did you feed the wires through from the passenger side? anyone have any guides or maybe just writeup of how to feed it? both mirrors were tested and work fine but the actual wires have not been fed through and connected yet. any info would be great.

also anyway to get it automated with open on acc and then close with off and still have the switch be functional or not yet?

In my OP there I also link other mirror threads which contain pics of my personal routing. I ram them through the grommet directly under the main wiring in the door jamb. I'm on mobile but will try and dig a pic if that up.

My JDM mirrors and switch are still sitting in the box LOL. Just hasn't been a priority for me, working on other things at the moment.

Great info in here, thanks for sharing!
