As Tom and Ray Magliozzi, better known as "Click & Clack" the Tappet Brothers of Car Talk would have put it: "The mechanic must have had a boat payment coming up" or in this case several boat payments.

The mechanics should have known when to stop and try to suggest a more cost effective alternative. ie... an used motor.

Man I have the same situation with my G coupe. The same day I bought it there was an issue already happening. I went to put gas in the, drove off and five minutes later the car shakes like crazy during low speeds and stopped twice at a red light. Smoke came out of the passengers corner side of the engine. And after I added some more coolant, light white smoke started comming out of the exhaust. Mechanic said it's just coil pack/ sparks but I think it's the HG.

(I think it should I could have replaced whole motor for this price). The guy who sold me the car gave me $1,000 and says he would get me more later (Anyone besides me think he will?) Grateful for the help he gave but still with this amount of money I could have bought a nice 2008! Oh well the moral of this story is that I will never buy another used car without a mechanic close by giving it a go over even if it cost me a couple hundred bucks its better than thousands.
Sadly, 4300 sounds about right.

If he (mech) went factory Cats, there $%^&ing expensive. And if it has been pumping heavy antifreeze vopor through it for any length of time it would not shock me they were eatan all to hell.

The rest of your bill is labor.. taking the heads off for someone super efficient is something like 5 hours .. having to refurb them adds on.

yeah in hindsight, once you heard 3200$ ... it aint much of a stretch to go for along block.

why would you think the HG is bad when the mechanic told you it's the coil?

the smoke coming out the exhaust could have been oil and fuel from the coil not firing.

Because all the symptoms that happened to my G pretty much relates to a HG issue based on the research I've done in the forums/threads. But I'm praying that's not the case, if the mechanic was working from Nissan/Infiniti I'd be more optimistic about it but idk who the mechanic is all I know is that I towed it back to the dealer so he can fix it and the dealer brought it to a mechanic. Benefits of a warranty I guess
