Re: question about painting lower sills
i got quoted $500. he said they had to bake the pieces to let the oils seep out so the paint would stick. i haven't been able to confirm whether this is true or not.
he said he could just remove the parts, so i didn't have to leave the car. later, i realized that would mean driving with no bumpers...

Re: question about painting lower sills
I asked about it while I had my car in to have the rear bumper fixed. I was told that it's a different kind of plastic, and it's textured, and paint doesn't stick very well. They could sand it and prep it and paint it, but they wouldn't guarantee it, as they fear in a few years the paint would start to peel off, and wind up looking much worse than the black trim does.
With that in mind, I've decided to hold off and see what happens with those that have painted their side sills.

Re: question about painting lower sills
I wonder if the 2004 G35 sedan will have body colored side sills. The BMW 7-series had black side sills in '99 and '00, but they body colored it in 2001. I don't own the G35 sedan but I think it looks alot better with body colored side sills.
Re: question about painting lower sills
I sincerely doubt Infiniti will introduce body colored side sills.
Infiniti made them darker than the body colors for a good reason. Darker sills effectively slim the car down when viewed from the side. The eye picks up only the body color as the overall silhouette of the car.
The cars I've seen with painted sills tend to look fat (top to bottom) when seen from the side, including those with aftermarket ground effects kits. IMHO it totally destroys the perceived lines of the car, giving it a much more humpbacked, kidney bean generic look.
Just my observations, but as usual, if you prefer that look then by all means go for it and enjoy it. Happy Trails....GeeSpot

Re: question about painting lower sills
take a look at "a few mods" about 3/4 of the way down on this forum. I think it looks much better. I'm going to have it done sometime next week.
Re: question about painting lower sills
Geespot,
No need to player hate on those of us who forked over the extra cash for the painted side sills and the body kits, most everyone out there would agree that the painted sills are much cooler looking that those cheap plastic ones that come with the car. The only exception I think is the Black color since it tends to match the best already. If people didn't like the painted sills better, you wouldn't even see this thread or hear about all the ways to get them painted!
As always though, you are right in saying that this is just an opinion, this too is just my opinion but I can guarantee I am not alone on this one.

Re: question about painting lower sills
Trust me, there's no need to player hate! I'm with you, GeeSpot, the G looks more distinctive to me with the grey sills, I've seen the painted sills, and it makes the G look like an Audi or Benz to me, too ordinary...

Re: question about painting lower sills
jmaloneydo,
I am not hating you or anyone else, or your cars either. Different folks like different things and that is all good by me.
I was addressing the poster who questioned whether Infiniti would go to stock painted sills. I do not believe they will (I could be wrong) and I posted the main reason why I don't think they will.
I seriously considered having my sills painted or adding a body kit, but when I compared the photo's of cars thus modified with photos of stock G's I noticed how much fatter (for lack of a better term) it makes the car appear from the side. For this reason I prefer the stock sills. I would have been upset if I had noticed this AFTER I had the work done and paid my hard earned money for it.
I wanted to bring this to the attention of the person who is considering painting his sills so he could have a different point of view prior to spending his money. It really makes no difference to me what Anyone does to their cars but I do feel free to express my opinion on any subject on this forum. Some of the photos AND opinions other people have posted have kept me from making several changes to my G35 that would have been mistakes for me personally.
As far as preferences, some folks like painted sills better and some do not. I did not say otherwise, however I did give my take on why the sills are darker from the factory and I did offer someone a different point of view on painted sills.
As always, I hope that everyone is happy with any changes (or not) that they have made to their cars. Just because I don't care for something doesn't mean I think you should feel that way too.

Re: question about painting lower sills
Good point, and very well stated. Opinions are what makes this such a great forum!
Painted sills or not, this car is still one of the hottest on the road. Enjoy it!

Re: question about painting lower sills
I actually think Infiniti may paint the lowers eventually (maybe in about 2 years in). Reason for that is for the sake of change. If you remember Mercedes-Benz E-Class cars had black bottoms when it first came out. They continued this trend from 1996-1999 and came up with a better looking slightly changed front/rear end with painted lowers. Same goes for Audi cars, although Audi A4's saves their painted bottoms for the S4.
If you notice, all the higher line-ups for each car have painted everything thus leaving the lesser valued (same) cars with black moldings, handles, mirrors, sills, etc. Just my 2 cents.

It's still a G thang!!

Re: question about painting lower sills
i think the sills arent painted because infiniti and other car manufacturers know that the type of person that would buy this car most probably will also be a person that would want to paint the sills. thats why they market these body kits -- so they can make more money.
higher end (more expensive) luxury cars have their sills painted already because the demographics of the people buying those cars show that they arent likely to care whether they are painted or not.

Rumble,
with all I have read on various forums about the paint chipping issue it occurred to me that the unpainted sills may be less likely to sustain chips or other damage. Have you or others run into any chipping problems with the painted sills or body kits? Just curious......GeeSpot
