DIY for replacing oil pump?

There has been a high-pitched whining sound coming from the engine lately on my son's 2003 G35 Sedan. I poked around and narrowed it down to the oil pan, which led me to believe it was a faulty oil pump on its way out. Today I dropped to oil pan to put in a new oil pump....wow! That's not a plug-and-play job. It's a lot different than other oil pumps I have replaced. So, a couple of questions...

1. Is there a DIY on replacing the oil pump? I couldn't find one in the DIY video section, nor on YouTube.
2. Is there another potential cause of a high-pitched whining sound that seems to be coming from the oil pan? It seems to come and go (I don't drive it daily to have a good sense of how often the sound is there).

Probably not since most people wouldn't have the means to replace it themselves. But here's the FSM: http://psedog.com/cars/fsm/g35/coupe/2006/lu.pdf

Agreed. Not a common issue here, and many don't have the means to tackle it. You might have to be the first one to do it and write a DIY

From what I see in the FSM, that would be a major undertaking. Also gleaned from the manual is that the pump is mounted on the front side of the crank shaft and not in the oil pan. Could the noise be from some other rotating piece?

When I had a high pitched whining noise it was the bearings in my water pump. The pump is driven by the chain, so that might be what you're hearing?
