Oil Catch Can confusion

I have a 2005 G35 Coupe with about 108,000 miles. I have noticed that the oil consumption is fairly bad. I have spent lots of time looking at videos and reading forum posts about the PCV system possibly being the culprit and fixing the problem with a catch can/ breather.

However I am confused about the install. It seems that everyone connects one hose from the catch can to the passenger side valve cover PCV port. But some of them connect the other hose to the PCV valve (and keep the PCV valve in the system), while others block off the PCV valve going to the the intake and route the 2nd hose to the driver side valve cover.

Can anyone explain the pros and cons of these methods? It would seem to me that one (removing the PCV) would reduce the oil consumption but would be illegal on the street, while the other method would just keep the oil from being burned, but it wouldn't affect the amount of oil you lose (it ends up in the catch can). But does either method help/hurt performance?
