Dealer charging DMV fees out of state

Sorry if this is way off topic.

I am purchasing my 2005 G35 out of state. The dealer is in NY. I am in CT. I was told by my dealer that in addition to the NY DMV fees (for in-transit plates), it is required that they get my CT plates as well. I am financing the car, and he said because of this, the bank requires the security of the car's registration, and that they don't (can't) rely on the customer to do this. The fee is around $250. Is this legit? I am picking up the car today or tomorrow.

I would talk to your financial institution about what they require rather than taking the dealer's word for it.

I find it difficult to believe that the dealer is going to have someone drive from NY to CT to register your car for you. If they do, then $250 seems like a really light price to do this.

I bought mine in NJ and I live in Indiana. They said they were required by NJ law to get the title and registration for me. I think the fee was more like $85 than $250. That is a crazy amount.

They did it all by mail so the $85 went for some overnight shipping. It was done within two weeks and I never had to go to a license branch. I did have to run to the local police station and have a VIN verification form filled out to prove to the local authorities that this was the same car as the title states. That took about 15 minutes. Plus I had to don a fake mustache and stay away from the wanted posters.... All those bar fights... hehe

I have bought 3 cars out of state...2 in New York and 1 in New Jersey. I was NEVER required to pay for the license tags. I find it highly unlikely that the state requires you to registier and get plates before leaving the state. I call BS! You get temporary tags for this very purpose. Of course, you will have to register/pay taxes in the state where you actually live, but this does not seem correct.

I recommend calling the NY DMV.

I was told that the reason for this is because I am financing through them (Infiniti Financial Services).

He said if I wasn't financing through IFS, then they wouldn't charge me the $250.

I'm doing this because they have a 1.9% APR offer.

Something isn't right. In '04 the license and title fee in NYS was 98 bucks for a coupe. Don't know what the transit tag fees are.

It maybe true that the lender may require it so that they can confirm that they are a lien holder on the title and they are made in addition to you as the loss payee with your insurance company.

Also, if the tax rate is less in the state you are registering your car, make sure that they don't charge you NYS sales tax as the sales tax is based on the state that the vehicle is being registered in. That could add up to some coin also. I would ask the dealer for a break down of all the fees and how they came to the total figure. It is you who is paying for all of this..... buyer beware.

Good luk with your new ride after you get through all the aggrevation.
