260 miles on half a tank!!

Just thought I would share my recent crazy gas mileage on my 03.5 6mt sedan. Took a trip to vegas this weekend. On the way back, filled up with mobil premium gas and drove off. Was doing mostly between 80-85 mph on 6th gear, every once in a while dropping to 5th on the long uphill climbs and for passing faster. The rpms were just above the 3k mark at that speed and gear and at the half tank mark, 260 miles were logged. drove all the way to San diego, 340 miles altogether and still had just a tad over a quarter of a tank left. The car went over 22k miles on the trip and a few hundred away from its next scheduled service of 22500 miles. That i figured averaged out to about 32 miles per gallon. Not too shabby.

80 - 85 MPH and you averaged 32 MPG? 80 MPH is 3K RPM in my car - dead on. I drive like a granny most of the time and can't touch that.

A recent 220 mile trip running 65 - 68 MPH and I pulled 26 MPG.

Either or your car is a mutant.

SWEET!
I took our '04 to NC a few weeks ago and we thought we rocked b/c I was getting slightly over 25mpg. I drive like a crazy person though - j/k. I was averaging about 80-85 though.

steady foot/ cruise control + long trip is really nice on gas for the G35.

the best i did was around 300KM on half a tank. but then, i have a heavy foot and wasnt travelling at 80-85mph, more like 100-110mph down I-5 to seattle. guess the extra gear helps alot

Extra gear?

You missed my point earlier. He said he was running around 3000 RPMs at 80 - 85 MPH. In my 5AT 80 MPH is dead-on 3000 RPMs. Very comparable - guess the extra gear didn't come into play once he reached cruise.

A steady foot, cruise control AND a constant 40 knot tailwind wouldn't get my G to 32 MPG. The only thing that would get me to 32 MPG is to forget to reset the counter before the trip...

That MPG can only be validated by refilling the tank, and using the number of gallons required to refill as the denominator of your MPG calculation. Relying on the position of the gauge needle is a crapshoot. Those things are never accurate.

Good point. I assumed he used the miles on the counter divided by the gallons pumped technique to come up with his number.

Agreed ... eyeballing 260mp on "half a tank" does not equal 32mpg. Let us know when you actually fill up so we can alll feel better! I'm still in break-in stage, and I'm 21-22 mixed, and 24-25 on the freeway trips to NorCal

Gee I wonder why the Infiniti guys couldn't get that kind of mileage for the EPA Cafe numbers. That would have been great for their marketing program. "Why buy a Civic when you can get the same fuel economy in our heart stopping asphalt pounding sport's sedan?" I think your calculations are off. Never figure mpg based upon the fuel gauge needle. Only at the pump.
