I'd work toward Cru's option - save yourself the trouble of stripping and recoating. They don't look bad - just not the right color for your car. Maybe if you split the cost of the PC with the person doing the trade (depending on the condition of their wheels) you'll come out ahead.

Personally, I wouldn't want to keep them that color either. The warthog analogy is about perfect - it looks like a military vehicle - and that's coming from someone in the military.
It will cost the same as it did the first time - roughly $400 (including dismount, re-mount and balance)... it will be the exact same process again. I was concerned about the integrity of the rim as well by having it done twice, but it doesn’t seem to be an issue as others have gone through he same trial and error... in fact I got lucky, today when I went back another guy didn’t like the color of his either so he's having them re-shot with a color I am considering - this time someone else gets to be the guinea pig - I'm going to see how those turn out early next week then decide what to do.

I will see if anyone has any interest in trading or buying them in the “marketplace” forum. Since I have a few days before anything is done I might as well see if that is an option.

Thanks everyone for you input and opinions.

Side question - how much weight does powder coating a wheel add to the assembly?
I didn’t weight them, but I did carry them when they were stock, when they were stripped, and again when they were coated... Completely non-specific way to determine but I didn’t notice an extreme difference. I suppose I could ask the powder coater if you were really interested.

Since I will be sizing up to 18 or 19" it will be 2.5-3K for tires and rims... if I re-do the PC I'm only out $800 that's $1700-2200 that can be spent on performance... but believe me, it IS an option that I am considering... was just hopping to hold off till I need new tires. I may have ruined that idea.

Since you are a Premier Member you could post in the Private Classifieds. Also post in the SoCal forum as well, local is better. And I understand about the $$$, if someone really likes them they should be willing to drop $400 on top of the trade.

Yeah, that's a shame about how the wheels came out. I have a feeling they'll grow on you, though. Like a weed.

On the bright side, your car looks like it might start on Row 4 at Bristol.

If you can afford it, just bite the bullet and get new wheels and tires. Throwing more money at your existing set could be a crapshoot, and they'll still be the stock skinny/puffy/shorties (still seems odd to say that about 215/55-17s).

Good luck!

I had a 04 Silver STI and had the stock wheels powder coated the color is a little darker not much. The color is anthracite if your able to get another set of wheels my car was a lighter color but it might be more what your looking for. I was really worried that they would be to dark but all my Subaru friends liked the color another guy actually had his wheels done the same color..

Yeah, that's closer to the color I was originally going after; these are a little darker than I was going for but pretty close. How do they look in the shade/shadows? Are they a lot darker? With the metallic finish light reflects nice, but they might look real dark at night or in the shade (which I want to stay away from). Thanks very much for posting them, I will check to see if anthracite is available - possibly in a little lighter shade (can you tell I'm gun-shy now).

i'm not a fan of the smoked tails either, sorry...

overall,as the car is now, it just looks like the car is plain dirty and in need of a wash

Indeed it is dirty, and it drives me nuts!!!! Sat on the tire shop rack for a day and a half while the wheels were getting PC - and since I have to start the whole process over next week and then take to body shop to have door trim stripped and handles removed, there's no sense in washing it now. Believe me I hate having it dirty!!! And I hate having the wheels this way. It will all change soon

I'm not certain you can't pull this off with those rims. But you're going to need to make a full commitment to the project. What your car is lacking is sufficient attitude to carry off the look. It needs to be lowered and it probably needs a body kit. A spoiler is almost a given.

I went searching for cars with gun metal rims or high color contrast to see which ones looked good. Gran Turismo 4 is a good source for car pics and I've attached a few here for illustration purposes. Sorry, a lot of Hondas - I went looking for Nissan's (Skyline or Infiniti) but couldn't find them.
