2nd time gas overfilled...sucks...

Hello all,

It's been 6 months since I owned the car. The first couple times in the winter (once it overfilled and gas spilled out, the other time it keeps clicking off even though the tank is not full). Brought it to dealer and they said they checked the fuel tank/neck/assembly and said everything was fine. So what I've been doing for the last 5 month was not to put the nozzle all the way so it leaves room for the vapors or whatever to come back up which is fine. Then it happened today at a mobil gas station. It overfilled just a little bit and spilled onto car. I am pissed. I've read people having this issue and some were fixed at the dealers and some where not. I've never driven a car that I have to worry about filling gas and watching making sure it doesn't spill. It's embarrassing and I had to clean the side of the car after the fillup. I've seen somewhere they have those rubbers that hang on the gas tube neck so any spills goes on the rubber and not the paint. Anyone know where to buy them? And anyone had similar issues like me and got fixed by the dealer?

Thanks...

There's quite a few posts about them, x or rwd. Some had to replace gas tank, gas neck assembly etc. The fill pump might have something to do with it too.

my tank clicks often too when its not full yet.

Just know how much fuel you should have to put in ur car when you fill it up, thats what i do, also try changing the angle that you put the nozzle in, that helps sometimes too

I have an 04 G35x and had the same problem. I agree it's embarrassing. Complained to the dealer. He told me to switch gas stations (to another brand) which I did and after that the problem went away. I've never had it happen again. I also keep the nozzle part way out when I start to fill up.

Switching stations may work (as it did for us) but we didn't switch brands, just stations. Each station apparently sets their pumps. We told the manager at our "regular" station and he told us that he has to set his pumps based on his underground tanks and that makes them not work for some people. ???

Also, check out the service bulletin as that may be your problem more than anything else.

Good luck with getting a fix

This happens to me too - it keeps clicking off every 4 or 5 seconds. I feeel very stupid when people are in the car. OK, I feel stupid all the time but not being able to pump gas doesn't help the situation.

Thanks for all the reply. I didn't know there's a service bulletin for this problem. Hm...maybe next time I'll bring it in when I get a chance. I mean I understand what all you guys said (change station, don't put the pump all the way in, estimate your fuel...etc). That's what I've been doing. I like filling it to the top because I can calculate my mpg (I don't have premium package that tells me my mpg). Also, why is it necessary for me to do all that? Seriously? A car is supposedly to cut off the fuel when it tops. My 13 yr old accord, I just pushed the nozzle in and go back into my car and come out when it's done. Never ever a spiledl or a clicked off. I don't think we should all suffer from this problem. If it bothers me I rather have it just fix at the dealers.

Did anyone showed this to the dealers?

They told me the same thing and it hasn't happened for 5 months then it happened last night.

Just called the dealer and scheduled an appt on 7/9. The service consultant I spoke to haven't heard of the TSB yet but he wanted me to bring the car in so he can take a look. That's a good start because last time they checked it there wasn't any TSB so they just kinda rubbed it off and said it's probably the gas station's pump, etc.

Will let you guys know how it is when I bring in my car.

I have not had any problems fueling my X. What dealer have you been using? You might try Competition in Smithtown.

I've found it to be an issue with all my Infiniti rides so I know I have to watch carefully when filling and fill slowly. Seems to be the nature of the beast.
If you spill any gas on the paint be sure to wax after wasing too.
